As it was suggested I use the search function to find what I wanted to know, and it was a fairly inconclusive result, I am seeking thoughts.
Rather than just asking what is good, I seek comments on this list. It will be a spare to build up until it's complete. This is what I gleaned from the 90 minutes, but as per paragraph 1...
1700 closed block
Standard valves but ported somewhat (do I need hardened seats?)
Pinto pistons (what rods?)
Cam grind with current availability? 90% road use.
Steel balance shaft gears with 1.5 shaft
Twin choke 28/36 DCD
Exhaust similar to Saab Sport.
Balancing? (Who to use?)

Any other thoughts welcomed.

If you use the 1.7 crank and standard Pinto pistons from say a Granada you will need to remove a good bit of material from the head combustion chambers or else the CR will be through the roof - ask me how I know. Back in the day Rich Simpson came to my aid by cc'ing a set of heads for me that would suit standard Pinto Pistons.Taking a bit of material off the top of the pistons would have been a lot easier in hindsight.

Thanks, appreciate the thoughts. My thought was to build another engine, just because I can, and right now, having sold all the toys in NZ the "toy fund" is looking OK which it might not in the future :)
When it went into a car, well that might be.....
I WILL be looking for alternate to steel wheels.

You want a closed deck block with matching heads (you'll have a hard time finding an open deck block and heads anyway). 1.5 and 1.7 blocks and heads are identical.

If the valves and seats are good I wouldn't spend money on hardened seats. If you do, you might want new valves and guides as well... Re porting: I would focus on enlarging the exhaust manifolds and matching the inlets on the intake manifold and heads. See the S&R manual and relevant forum threads.

Pinto pistons for >1.7 engines, JP for 1.5s. 1.5 and 1.7 con rods are identical.

You can balance pistons and rods yourself, as well as the flywheel/ clutch assembly. I've never bothered with balancing, so can't advice from experience.

I would first buy a car and drive it a bit to establish what you want before starting an engine build. I'm sure a good condition 1.5 engine with a Jetex exhaust, some porting and a proper carb on the 2bbl manifold you already have won't disappoint you for road use.
