The previous owner left it in all the time as it is hard to remove, but I found a way to get it out, but it's a bit like a safe-breaker picks a lock! And I think it leaves the car in neutral rather than reverse.

It's not a major problem for me, but not ideal if anyone else has to drive it.

It feels like the 'release' position is in the wrong place, rather than not working, but I've never taken one of these mechs apart to see how it works and what can be done.

I wondered if this is a common or easily fixable problem?
Thanks,
Mark

The wiring diagram was drawn up by forum member green96v4, here's another one he did that I still need to add to the site: http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?topic_id=49202

Perfect, thank you.
I also see a nice wiring diagram on your site, which will help me trace a few gremlins.

Very easy to fix, you need to adjust the steering column. See here for instructions: http://www.saabv4.com/index.php/project/gear-shift/ (or download the workshop manual from my website for more detail: http://www.saabv4.com/index.php/saab-factory-manuals/saab-v4-factory-workshop-manual-english/)
