Hi All,

I'm attempting to register a 96 I imported, DVLA are asking for a certificate of conformity, looking online there are site wanting to charge £200.00 for one.... !!

Surely one hat fits all, if it a Saab 96 made by Saab then there should be one certificate for them all..?

Anyone been through theses hurdles..?

Cheers,

Dave.

He doesn't need the help though. ;)

Homologation/ type approval info for the 96 can be found in the '72 S&R catalogue if anyone's interested: http://www.saabv4.com/index.php/saab-factory-manuals/saab-sport--rally-catalogue/

It was headed up as a COC, to all effects and purposes a data sheet, that gave all the technical data of the car. It was a poor photocopy.

It's somewhat more complicated taking a car into France, because the French authorities have a formula to calculate the fiscal horsepower rating. From this magic number, all other things emanate, like how much insurance you pay, road tax (which still existed at the time), cost to change ownership etc etc.
It's calculated from a whole host of things including engine size, number of cylinders, number of gears, petrol or diesel, auto or manual, final drive ratio and probably more.

The MG was 10 Hp, a "Deux Chevaux is of course 2 horse power.
It's only vaguely related to the true power of the car.
What annoyed me was that they didn't recognise the overdrive as a 5th gear. If they had, the MG would have been 8 HP...!

I'm sure the SOC can help rekab69 out, though he may of course have to join the SOC.

Andy, you probably got a "dating letter" from MG Rover, which stated that they produced the vehicle at a certain date and to certain standards. The standardised EC CoC became mandatory for four-wheelers in 1996 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_approval), as far as I know Saab started issuing it with new cars in 1994.

Not that it matters, as rekab69 won't need any proof of European conformity anyway as his car is older than 10 years.

I can certainly say that it is possible to get certificate of Conformity for cars older than 1994.
In 1990 I upped sticks and moved to France, taking my 1978 MGB with me.
I had the same issue, the French authorities inisted on a COC. Now, MG - Rover still existed at the time, and they supplied me with one.
I seem to remember it costing 800 French Francs at the time, or £80.
After that it was plain sailing. My MGB has a French registration document to this day!

The best place to start is with the SOC.
As someone already stated, get a hold of Alistair Philpott.
There's also a chap called Turner, Peter Turner I think, he helped me get the details on my registration document, for my 96, corrected by the DVLA.
(it said 95 instead of 96, and it said that the date of first registration was May 1985, instead of July 1978. May 85 was the date the car was imported to the UK)

If you need Alistair's E mail address PM me, or E mail me on andydeans3, then gmail.com

They are not available for <1994 cars and you don't need one anyway for a car over ten years old. Some very sound advice on importing and registering a car here: http://forum.retro-rides.org/thread/198659/register-imported-car

Hi Dave,

I think Alistair Philpott from the Saab Owners Club is the guy to speak to.
