T O P I C R E V I E W | JMat99 | Posted - 23 Jul 2019 : 19:37:07 My recently restored 1972 96v4 tends to run hot. Never to boiling point and certainly in more normal ambient temperatures than currently being experienced! The recorded mileage is circa 104,000.
I can see this topic has appeared on the forum before but in relation to earlier models which did not have an expansion tank. Mine has one of course.
Any tips or suggestions what to check starting with the simplest/cheapest of course. | 3 L A T E S T R E P L I E S (Newest First) | EdinburghJoe | Posted - 27 Jul 2019 : 21:35:08 I had problems with mine and the main cause was that the thin copper fins in the radiator had corroded and started to disintegrate. I got the radiator re-cored locally for about £150, he used a three - core insert instead of the standard two, and it runs much cooler. That said, other things that helped were to remove the radiator and reverse flush it (including the hose to the expansion tank), and set the timing as suggested by Melle. My points had a gap which was way too small.
Joe. | melle | Posted - 24 Jul 2019 : 13:02:27 I would suggest checking the ignition timing before you do anything else.
Are the rad and expansion tank caps fitted in the correct location and do they seal well enough? The cap with the pressure valve should be on the expansion tank; you can have it pressure tested at a local garage. Do not overfill the expansion tank; "MIN" indicates the maximum level when cold, "MAX" is maximum level when hot.
