My door cards were getting decidely ropy, so I decided to have a go at making some new ones, using hard board material I bought localy, and vynil from a company called Martrim ( https://martrim.co.uk/car-trimming-supplies/vinide-leather-cloth-rexine-door-trim.php).
Around £26 (of which postage is nearly half!) for enough vynil to do 2 door. Basically a 1 metre length, width 1.4 metres.

First of all, after using the old door card as a template, and cutting the hardboard to size, I treated it with Sikkens, wood preserver. This is the stuff I treated my new garage with a number of years back. It's not cheap, but very good. All this so that if the plastic back sheeting I fitted, should allow some moisture in, the hardboard would perhaps not immediately turn to dust.

Cut round the vynil, then using evostick contact adhesive, stuck the vynil onto the board. The again using evostick, stuck plastic sheeting on the back. I prefer this approach to sticking the plastic to the door, which just creates access problems later, when you want to get into the back of the door.
I made a small booboo around the plastic surround of the door realease handle, on the drivers door, and I could have made a better job of getting the air out at one or two small places, on the passenger door, but it looks a guzzillion times better than the old stuff.
I might even have another go, and try and do a better job.
Some photos.

Bare board cut to size.

Treated with Sikkens

Front - annoying bubbles, where I wasn't hard enough with the squeegee.

Plastic on the rear.

On the car

Also made new boards for the boot. 3.5 mm Plywood.

Melle. I regard these new door cards as a "first attempt", because I'm not happy with some of the bubbles, in the passenger door, and I made a boo boo, cutting the slot for the handle, on the drivers side.
ie I may have another go.
The idea of using plastic sheeting hadn't occured to me, and deserves some thought for "Revision 2".
I have other things going on with other cars in the fleet, so to say, at the moment. I'll revisit later in the year.

Deggsie. As Melle says, my ashtray is/was in the dash.
Also, my car never had that fake chrome trim at all. Swedish spec, late, late car, I suppose explains it.

You can just see the ashtray below the rev counter in the photo below. It's just the front of the ashtray that you see, the actual ashtray behind, was removed to make way for the rev counter.

LHD 95/96s don't have ashtrays on the doors, they have a pull-out one in the centre of the dash.

Andy, instead of using hardboard and a bin bag, have you thought of using a solid plastic backing instead?

I used this trimguard (available online I think) and stuck it straight over the top of the cracked plastichrome on the door cards. (comes backed with 3M tape)

Not perfect and the profile isn't the "double hump" of the originals, but I felt it was better than the cracked originals

This is something I want to have a go at as I still have the door covers for 1968V4, 1972V4 and my black 1970 ones are showing their age now.
I wish to try to retain the standard fixings whilst I am at it.

Not sure what fake chrome you're talking about, I don't think this car has ever had fake chrome around the doors.
As for fixing, yeah, I got rid of those useless clip things a long time ago.

Well done, Andy - looks good. You've decided to do away with the fake chrome decor strip I see.
I think I may have to convert mine to self-tappers too - less troublesome than the original clips.
