Starting to get the 96 back together again, progress can be seen here:

I've removed the battery tray and plan to relocate the battery to the boot; so a couple of questions. Routing a +ve cable through the firewall to the starter should be easy enough. The earth strap did go from the battery to the tray and thence to the body, fine, I can do something similar in the boot. However the earth strap also went to the block, why is that? I obviously don't want an unnecessary earth cable going all the way from the battery to the engine block, so can't I attach a short earth from the block to the nearby bodywork?
Looking at the wiring diagram there also appears to be an earth from the battery earth cable going to the headlight circuit, I can see that is required if the lights are 'on' if the ignition switch is not in operation but why can't the light circuit just be earthed to the bodywork?
Excuse me if I'm being a doughnut here, electrical work is not a strength...

Yeah....I might just do that; a nice aluminium one with some posh clips onto the cross brace.

I would make a new removable tray in the engine bay.

Coming together nicely! Weird brake master reservoir, they're normally much taller, wonder what that's come off.

All makes sense apart from the lighting circuit having what appears to be an earth to the earth strap rather than to the body itself.
Reasons for moving the battery; tray is rusty as U571, tray was put in a spectacularly crap position and yes, it helps with weight distribution a wee bit.

The starter is earthed to the block and then via the earth strap from the block to the body. Battery in the boot needs to be earthed to the adjacent body just as it would at the front.
For the positive lead make sure it is a nice big one as far as thickness goes to reduce voltage drop. Use good grommets where it goes through the bulkheads and have it secured at several places along its length with insulated P clips.

Not sure why you want to relocate the battery. Yes, it does take a few pounds off the front but not really worth it just for that reason.

...I see why the block is earthed; I think I remember an earth from the starter to the block. After all the block (and starter) are insulated by the engine mounts from the body.
