All resolved!
Thanks to Chris for posting the pic of the curved stay, which is upside down from any of the other 200 odd cars I have owned, but works for me.
I have returned Paul Green's alternate "hockey stick" type, thanks Paul, and Jon's curved one is heading home.
Now, here is the really weird thing! When I went to try things this morning, sitting on top of the RH cylinder head was another of the curved ones. I am positive it wasn't there on Wednesday when I was playing around. Either the fecking leprechaun is playing games with me, or some other kind Saabist has done me a huge favour. Whichever, it did my head in this morning when I saw it!

I don't have one, so I don't know which I need! Paul has dropped around the one in the 2nd pic today so I will be trying that in the morning. While I'm at it I'll have a go with the curved one, I never thought to try it that way up.

Is it this one?

or this

or is there another type?

That's why I said a link to a picture. Have a search around 96 engine bays on Goggle images for a picture.

This one? https://www.justcars.com.au/cars-for-sale/1967-saab-96-v4/JCW5009256#&gid=1&pid=5

Derek, to take a picture I would have to have one!. Paul tells me there is one more shaped like an ice hockey stick than a constant curve, it's the hockey stick on so I am told.

Can you link to a picture of the one you want, or think you want?

How bizarre, there are more than one variety of this simple part. And guess what, the one John sent is one that gives about half an inch of adjustment, so back to square one, AGAIN.

Many thanks to John Wotherspoon, you are a gem.
