Noooooooooooooooo!!!

I've asked a friend at guardian auto bulbs to see if they know anyone - let you know if I hear anything.

Bl**dy H*ll!!!! That makes very sad reading.

As I said in my note, I did see other lamps and that might be the easiest way to get another one. Unfortunately, a family event means that I won't get to Battlesbridge at the end of the month. I think I'd have had a good chance of finding another one there. At least you've got a better lamp.

My mate at Guardian says...

Sorry it's an odd bulb which is very old and we can't get. If you want to look at our web site which is www.guardianauto.co.uk, we list that base but not that exact bulb.

I thought i was heading for trouble..i had a rumble from the engine..oil pressure was good and after a quick check i thought it was a grumbling water pump bearing. With my "modern" SAAB (1999 9-3)off the road i had no choice but to use Veronica to go to work on Tuesday..a journey of 50 miles each way. She was fine on the journey to work but half way home, after a 60mph stretch of duel carriageway, i pulled up to a set of traffic lights (it was around 8pm and dark..i could see steam rising...a quick glance down and the temperature gauge was well into the red..i pulled over and lifted the bonnet..there was water every where but not from the pump area..it had come from the overflow cap. I thought that the pump had given up but when i tried to turn it it felt fine BUT..a big BUT..the balance shaft pulley spun with the water pump pulley..with no risistance.
I will have a quick look later today but i'm sure that the balance shaft gear is still engaged because i drove the car onto the hard sholder..it's almost as if the pulley was spinning on the shaft..but i will know more later.(insert a very unhappy "smiley")

It's been over a month since i had to be recovered by the AA and due to illness and other issues i haven't had a chance to look at the car..today i found time to get out and have a look..I wish i hadn't..i took the front cover off to find this..

The balance shaft has no play at all..the camshaft is flopping around so unusually it's the camshaft that caused the problem..maybe that's why there is a big chunk missing from the large fiber gear. Ho-hum!

Veronica has been off the road for 4 months now and as a tax reminder arrived i thought it was time to get it sorted...A reminder of what i found when i took the front cover off..

So today i pulled the engine from the car..beating my own record..with the bonnet and front panel already removed it took just under 20 minutes to undo everything and lift the engine out.
The sump was full of teeth..

Out came the balance shaft and i was shocked to see that apart from a few scratches (unusual spiral scatches???) the bearings looked to be in reasonable condition..

The back bearing was also even better condition..I took the end plate off the camshaft to find this..

With the camshaft out here was the problem..

I had a set of bearings sitting here ready to be fitted to another engine but the piston bores on this engine are in great condition and the crankshaft/big end bearings are like new so they went into this engine.
I have tried to fit a set of bearings before and wrecked them..this time i made up tools for the job.
The engine sat in front of a space heater for 2 hrs so that it was warm and in theory expanded..the bearings were left in the freezer over night.
For the 3 camshaft bearings I made this tool from a rod of nylon..it is machined to protect the bearing and offer a straight fit for the hard to reach center bearing...

With these bearings getting the oil holes lined up is vital..it's tricky with the center bearing as it's pretty deep in the engine but with good light and a lot of care it was drifted into place.

Then onto the outer bearings..much easier..

As it was out I changed the balance shaft bearings..again with home made nylon drifts..

Job done..

With the camshaft and balance shaft back in i left it for now..tomorrow i will strip the heads and check for wear..I also need to check the oil pump..it was full of long strips of a plastic like substance..these had been sucked right up past the gauze and into the neck of the pick up pipe???...they dont look like much in this picture but the black bits you can see are 10-30mm strands of black plastic..very strange..

I have a load of original head gaskets and other gaskets but i need to buy some (quality) inlet manifold gaskets asap before this all goes back together.

Glad to see work is progressing John! I know it can be depressing when every time you look, you find something else that needs fixing, but just think of the satisfaction when you finally get it bowling down the road again!

And just in time for summer!

Keep up the good work!

Thanks, very informative.

I did not dare to replace the camshaft bearings myself... had them replaced by an engine rebuilder, they charged me 100 euros labour cost.

For the balance shaft bearings I had a tool made like yours, but out of aluminium.

Next time I need to replace camshaft bearings I will copy your nylon tool.

Your oil pressure must have been very low with that bad bearing, well below 3 bar/45 PSI with warm engine at idle. That is why I have fitted oil pressure guages in all my V4s.

How much oil pressure??? My original '69 car could barely make 45 psi on the motorway when it was brand new!!! At idle it was usually around 28-30 psi!

My current car (Vege engine with about 20,000 miles on it) holds 60 psi at anything over tickover when warm, but can only manage between 25 and 28 when idling!

I've had many Ford engined cars down the years, and they've always been fairly low on oil pressure - its just the way they are!

With the V4, I would start to worry if it dropped much below 20 psi at idle. When the balance shaft bearing go, its usually enough to bring the warning light on at idle, which is probably around 5 psi?

Yes... 3 bar (45 PSI) warm engine, idle (all new bearings);

The safety valve in the oil pump opens at 4 bar (60 PSI) so oil pressure could never be higher than that.

Yes, I think the oil pressure sensor has "0.5" stamped on it, meaning 0.5 bar or +/- 7,5 PSI.

Good Grief! And I thought mine had good oil pressure!

What is everyone else getting? I've never seen a V4 deliver that much at idle, except when its stone cold, first thing in the morning!
