I have upgraded the alternator of my 71 96 to 70AMP. After that, the temperature gauge goes up to red whenever the electric fan kicks in or when I switch on the light and stays there. Before the upgrade, the gauge was normal, it only went up a bit when I switched on the light.

Anybody knows why.

Just one thought.

Having replaced the alternator you would have had to re-tighten the fan belt. Is it turning the water pump OK ? Does the temperature run at normal without the lights and fan on ?

I have tightened the fan belt. The temperature is normal, only goes up to red when the lights and the electric fan are on.

Thank you.

where have you taken the +ve power feed from for the electric fan? sounds like this is dropping the voltage and affecting the temperature gauge
Personally I would use a relay and take the power from the alternator terminal or the battery via a fuse to the relay because electric fans use a lot of current and the existing wiring / fusebox is not really up to having lots of accessories added

The instruments are earthed through a tag behind the dash - just above the driver's right knee in a RHD car. On my car, it also holds the flasher unit in place.

If this connection is less than perfect, you can get all sorts of weird readings as you turn different things on and off, so check that you have a *really good* earth connection here!

BTW, don't overtighten the fan-belt. Run it as slack as you can get away with! Running it tight not only wears the water pump quicker, it also puts a lot of load on the front pulley, which is on the balance shaft, not the crank! The balance shaft bearings are a weak spot in the V4, and you really don't want to load them any more than you have to!

Thank you all.

At the moment I have taken the +ve power from the ignition fuse. I will change and take the power from the alternator. Will let you know the outcome.

I have installed a relay for the electric fan. Now, when the fan is on, the temperature gauge still goes to red, but comes down after a while. But when I switch on the lights, it goes to red and stays. After I cleaned all the connection points at the relay located above the fuse box, the temperature stays normal when I switch on the lights.
