| Need to replace sender unit. Apparently standard to all V4's.
Does anyone know what the ohms are? I have seen two references - one says 15-190ohms - empty/full and 30-240ohms empty/full. The latter was on a 99 site but he finishes by saying "This is the same sender that's in a V4 96."
Thanks |

| The sender in my spares box(which came from a '72 96 and needs re-winding) is marked "38/228".

| Sent my single unit petrol gauge to VDO for them to measure resistance -it needs a 3 - 180 ohms sender (empty/full) Having difficulty finding one in UK and then the 5 hole plate has a shroud round the connectors that would protrude into the boot floor. Contacted Smiths Insruments and sent them the gauge. They measured resistance at 5 -190 ohms and said that a standard 10-180 ohms sender unit would be within tolerance. The 38/228 marked on the plate must be a VDO reference number. Smiths can sort out a new one albeit without the low warning light. | |

| I ordered a VDO 226 163 (33-240 ohms) and fitted it just before winter, I was basing my order off the 38/228 markings Deggsie is referencing, but it was doing some strange things to the gauge. I haven't had the opportunity to test it fully (full, empty tank, does the low indicator come on correctly?) but now you've had yours measured, I'm beginning to think I ordered the wrong one!!
oh well, it's only money! | |

| Sorry to hear that - it's why I posted again as 38/288 does not refer to resistance. I have just ordered a cheap VDO replica 10-180 ohms from Shanghai and will give it a try when it eventually arrives! | |

Appears same as Smiths 5 hole universal fuel sender unit - part number TA9110-000. I was told this would fit -obviously as it is universal the float arm may need adjusting. Remember, neither have the low fuel warning light
Cheers - Mike

| Thanks Mike - let me know if it works, I can source the VDO 226 162 (3-180ohms) in Canada for $50 odd, not sure whether it would be worth another gamble or just to get the one you've ordered and do without the warning light....

| I'd go for VDO with low warning light if it fits - sell the other on ebay - "hardly used"! Like you said it's only money. Will certainly let you know how the 'copy' turns out. You might let me know how well the one you have in fits - clearance to boot floor.

| I realize this is an old thread but Ive been dealing with an issue with my fuel gauge not working and I confirmed it was the sending unit and not the gauge by way of a simple method I used to confirm the sender had a zero resistance open circuit . If you don’t have a test meter that can duplicate a resistance load all you need to do is attach the wires of a stereo speaker to the sender harness ( negative to ground and positive to the sender level signal wire ) and it will create an OHM load similar to your fuel tank being low on fuel ( around 10 ohms ) But the main reason I’m posting to this thread is just to let people know that there’s a universal VDO fuel sender available and it’s reasonably affordable and it did the job quite well , it even has a terminal to hook up the low fuel light on the gauge if you have one.
Here’s the link from where I got it but I’m sure you could probably find it at other sources as well.
