| it could be a rebuilt engine, but definitely not a VeGe if there is no alloy tag. Any chance of a photo of the engine number? Could be a Ford number, they aren't punched in as neatly as Saab numbers for some reason. This one is on a 1.7HC Transit engine:
PCV = positive crankcase ventilation, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crankcase_ventilation_system. The pcv valve sits in the intermediate plate between the inlet manifold and the carb. It screws out and you can clean it by soaking it in thinners. If the hose between the valve and the rocker cover is clogged up it's worth cleaning that and removing the baffle plate inside the rocker cover for a good scrub. Please note dirt build up in an engine is a symptom, so best to solve the underlying problem (e.g. worn piston rings/ bores, rich running, ignition timing).
Re the pitting in the bores: below pic is of an engine I stripped recently. According to the seller it ran perfectly when removed from the car (replaced with a V6), has been standing in a "dry" storage for about a decade and it wouldn't turn over when I bought it because of the amount of rust in the bores. I believe this is caused by condensation, I've had a few more like this.

| This is a VeGe engine number tag, "2150" indicates 1.5HC:

| The Vege plates are held on with glue. I found the one for my 96 on the floor of the engine bay.

| Was there an old engine number visible on the block or had it been ground off?

| Engine No picture below - a right mismatch of No's. Maybe stamped by a 'YOP' scheme member ?? Think I can just make out an EY in there.
I never thought to measure the bore diameter whilst the heads were off. I just presumed it would be a 1500. My other motor is stamped as a HC 1500 and the pistons looked very similar. Assuming that it is the piston is the differential between HC & LC?

| EY is 1.5 HC. I've never seen a LC 1.5, I doubt they exist. Bore is identical for 1.5 and 1.7, the difference is in the crank and pistons (also the conrods are identical).

| Big day - engine out day. Hired a hoist from an Ebayer for the princely sum of £10 per day. Often thought about buying one, but it's not something that will get much use (hopefully) Apologies for being upside down-It's the correct way on my web host!
Not the cleanest of engine bays as expected from what I could see with the motor still in. Most of the 'black' has turned out to be a layer of underseal as I've already began to scrape away, but no pictures.

Keep up the good work.

| Looks like somebody has done it all before in the past which may make life easier
I will try and follow your work with mine as you do it, as mine is in the same state. I got stuck at getting the heater matrix out and it got left

| Heater matrix ! stop adding jobs to my list Don't think I'll be going that far, but you never know! I'm really not bothered about a show car engine bay and my intention has always been to brush paint under there. There's only ever likely to be me who pays close attention under the bonnet. Long term I would like to 'go to town' on Betsy and really do the job right. Bare metal shell and start again, which would involve a colour change. My last build in the pic and sprayed by myself too I think Betsy would look the doggies in this colour c/w HSP alloys and all the chrome/stainless
I don't have the facility or storage in order to do this yet and I enjoy having Betsy as 'nice, but not too nice to use in all weathers'. Also, she's great fun to drive, so a long restoration isn't on the cards yet. | |

| I have been busy - all the engine and gearbox mechanicals are now complete (apart from forgetting to align the clutch plate !) The next two pictures show the difference in height of the - well, middle bit, because I've no idea what it's called! I've used 6 shims @ 0.1mm each and I reckon that the ratio is about 5 or 6/1 ish. Supplied by Spalding fasteners in errr Spalding. The second picture is probably a little misleading due to the angle.
Progress on engine bay. Blow torch and a scraper about 1 1/2" wide were the choice of weapons. A few singed hairs on the back of my hand is a small price to pay.
As we're all 'car nuts' we know that nothing ever goes as intended and there's always a catch! or in this case a couple of holes. Easy enough to sort whilst the motor is out. Nothing too major, so not too much to worry about.

| Attacked the front left corner this morning. I must have been enjoying it as it 1pm before I realised - thought it was about 11! Before and after shots. 4 different pieces were used to get the shape as it's quite a complex area to replicate. The other side looks a little better, but I think it will be more of the same. A pain in t rear, but would have been much more of a pain had everything gone back in. MOT was due a week or so ago, which would have been a 'fail'. As I'm typing I have now discovered the weld burns rubbing under my cuffs. There'll no doubt be a few sock holes too. The outside welds have been ground, but as for the insides, It was left as is. All now blathered in brushable seam sealer.

Well, they do exist:quote: The 1,5 LC engine with 60Hp has the code L5,its compression ratio is 8,0:1.the 1,7LC/65Hp is L8 and the 1,7 HC/70HP is code 8. There is no 1,5 HC engine in the P5,only for the 12m P4/P6 TS.

| Has it really been a week since I last posted The weather has now drawn in and stopped play for today - and probably the weekend, if the forecast is correct! All the welding repairs are now done and seam sealed over. Some bits better than others, but it's now all solid for a good few years to come. I'm not sure how far I will go regarding the prep of the engine bay. Betsy is almost a 'Daily' status car (although most of my commutes are on 2 wheels and involve pedalling) and spending so much time is not worth the effort and end result. If and when it comes to a complete strip and repaint, then that will be different. Clean, solid and presentable for now. A few shots of the removed bits n bobs, which have been cleaned and repainted. Nothing too exciting but should look quite tidy once all back together.
