Hello,
I want to present myself and the car I bought last summer. It came from finland to south Spain running along 5.000km and arrived a bit tired but I think that with a lot of love can survive another 30 years.(at least)

The previous owner came with another friends in cars very cheap and in bad conditions making the "mediterranean scrapyard run" just to leave them in a demolition house in Spain, take two week holidays and come back to finland by plane.

The car is a '79 v4 saab 96 GL, painted in darker green than the acacia metallic original. My idea is to restore it keeping as much original as I can but with the intention of use it frecuently. At this moment I'm arranging the legal documents (a lot) to obtain the spanish plates.
Mechanically is good but it suffered a bit the late kms of the trevel as the exhaust valves wasn't well adjusted.(no gap on 3 valves)

Welcome to the Forum.
It is sad that one would want to use a V4 for this sort of run, but it has otherwise given you an opportunity to acquire a classic Saab. I am unaware of how many were imported into Spain. It would be interesting to see photos of the engine bay, boot area and sills. Later models have succumbed to rot quite badly, but with your climate being hotter the car could have a better future.
This is the place for any questions on V4s and thanks for showing us your car.

Welcome to the forum! Those 99/900 wheel covers are much sought after!

Thanks for your comments; the others cars of the run probably didn't deserve to be saved.

SAAB started to sell cars in Spain with the C900, in fact there was a protected market that closed the door to another car not build in Spain. So previous SAAB models must be imported later. It's quite difficult to see 96 or 99 on the roads.

The whether of couse is better than in finland and where I live, far from the coast is quite dry.
The car is quite correct, with no so much corrosion. It's seen that someone in the past made repair welding and painting the hole car in that green. The original is lighter.

The worst in my opinion are the bottom sills, under the doors, they are rusted internally and it's a closed part difficult to repair.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Your V4 is definitely a car worth saving! Looks nice in that colour and as Melle said, those 900 GLE 'Bugatti style' wheeltrims are very rare - and I think they suit the car.

I used to drive to Spain every summer from 1985 through to the late 1990s, in my old Saab 99s [both red] and any old Saab was a very rare sight indeed. I once had to go the Saab dealer in Alicante to get a headlamp relay - cost a fortune...

Good luck and keep the photos coming.

First thing was to repair the starter. Sometimes was difficult to start, the problem was the solenoid. Even if it is possible to find new cap with contacts, cleaning the contacts was enough to fix the starter.

The other big problem is the solex TDID carburettor. Not very good fame it has indeed.
It seems that many people change it for a weber but, seen the prices I'm going to try to fix it.
Anybody tried it before? Probably every TDID has the same problems.
I've opened and cleaned but the idle is high. Too much petrol in the main bore, probably because of a wrong vacuum.
I've found a servicing about it:

Does anyone to know how to adjust the float? this float square model is more present in solex for audi than for saabs therefore I don't know the distance between the float and the cover.

You bend the small tab that touches the ball of the needle valve. My factory workshop manual went with my car to Brisbane. I'm pretty sure it had all of the settings for this Solex in it. Perhaps Saabo-John/John Curlie can help you out with some details?
The Haynes won't be much help, it doesn't even have the correct FoMoCo settings for the final UK cars, including the Souvenir, as I found out to my cost!

I have 6 pages on the Solex 32TDID in my Manual. If you would pm me your email address I shall scan to PDF. Also parts diagram from parts book of carb and air cleaner as required. Float should be 17-19mm measured at both sides measured with Vernier scale. My manual hasn't any jettings info.

False air is a common issue with these carbs. Check the upper half's bottom for flatness, if bent (most are because of previous over tightening of the nuts) file down and afterwards grind with valve grinding paste on a perfectly flat service (glass works best). Clean thoroughly afterwards, you don't want any of the grinding paste to enter your engine on its own conditions! Do not over tighten the nuts again.

Thank you for your answers.
I feel very close to the problem.
I'will check the flatness of the carb. the previous owner change the bottom gasket for another one(not very new) and probably without take account of the flatness.
I'm going to make a new gasket buying a kit from ebay.
Would it be a good idea to use a rubber gasket instead of paper gasket?

Finally I'could remove the carb, and, bingo, as you predicted the carb is curved and with the gasket broken and in bad condition.
