Ach. I'd love to go guys, but myself and my wife, and another crowd of folks, are off to York that weekend.

I'll be there too, Andy - my Registration Pack was waiting for me when I got home from the Inverness Classic Car Show today (after a 'short' 100 mile detour to meet the UKSaabs convoy at Lochcarron on its way via the Bealach na Ba to Applecross).
I believe Jim "Stig" Martin is also registered - others ?

Deggsie

What was the weather like at Inverness and at Loch Carron for the the Applecross group?

Gutted at missing it, but going to the Bridge of Allan show today as a consolation.

Weather was not at all bad; I even got a bit sunburnt ! Sunshine and light cloud all day, no rain to speak of.
A couple of hundred classic vehicles, but only one Saab (mine). Lots of street entertainers/musicians and a pipe band (which later lined the High Street for the parade).
Had a good (ie rapid and enjoyable) run to Lochcarron(c.63 miles). Managed to leave Inversneckie after the parade about 3.30pm.
No rain until after Achnasheen, which reduced to a heavy drizzle by the time I arrived in Lochcarron about 4.40pm. The UKSaabs convoy arrived about 5 mins later ! It was good to meet up for a chat with them all (supplemented by two who had driven up from Berkshire the previous day); your absence was noted !
Enjoy Bridge of Allen (good no doubt, but no comparison to the Bealach). See you soon.
Derek

Home from a fantastic weekend over to Applecross ( sadly not in my 96) 536 miles in my 900s LPT . . . .what a hoot.

My call up papers for the " How Many Left" event have been delivered.

See you all there on Sunday.

Cheers

Well that was an eventful day!
Though less other cars overall than last year, Saab still made a good showing as the pics below show. Lots of chat with visitors and the sun even came out for a while!
Great to meet up with forum members and after a chat with GeoffC I think I will be making a visit to the RAC Rally in November...just too tempting to see his 96 in action.

Unfortunately, on the way home and getting a little over exuberant, I overtook a Sierra that had also just left the show, pressed home my advantage, yumped, and found the limits of my suspension....

Lower ball joint on order, shouldn't be too difficult to do both.

Ouch...

Looks like a great day out, the museum is always worth a visit too. Is the 96 with the flames ex-Guy Martin?

That's the one, and next to it is his gravity cart
. With suspension looking remarkably like mine!!

It's a small museum but they have more items than space so they rotate displays often and there is always something new to see.

I think you must mean GavinC who I believe will be out in his 99. Sadly my rallying days are over after selling PUP 96K some time ago

Hope to be out spannering for one of the Saabs if I can get a 4 day pass out!!

Your failed ball joint looks a bit dramatic, I have never seen one go like that before - only on Morris Minors!! Hope it didn't damage anything else.

Sorry Geoff, my bad.

The ball joint failure was fairly comprehensive but actually quite easy to achieve.
Basically the ball got completely lifted out of the socket, which when I think about it isn't that hard - it's only held in by a plastic lip I think, but doesn't usually have a "pulling" force on it so that should be fine.

In this case, the seal had failed and the socket was completely dry and rusty inside, all traces of lubricant long gone.

With the bottom ball separated, the whole assembly rotated around the drive shaft axis until the cv joint came out of the drive cup on the side of the gearbox, and the wheel stopped moving back when it met the bulkhead wheel arch.

I was able to jack it up, take off the wheel and reseat the cv joint, then using a pry bar, I realigned the ball and dropped it back into the socket. Replaced the jack under the joint and jacked it up again until it had seated home. A couple of cable ties later and it could be steered onto the recovery vehicle...and when I got home I reversed into the garage under its own power.

Could have been a whole lot worse..Photos to follow when I start the repair.

I organised a wee event at the GTM in 2010: http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2185 Would love to do a little tour of Scotland combined with How Many Left, maybe next year if time allows.

Andy, good luck with the repair. Hope you can source a decent quality ball joint, the Scantech/ Professional Parts Sweden stuff that most "specialists" seem to stock is rubbish.

Apologies Andy.

When I sailed past with horn toots and waves, I had no idea that you were in trouble.

You looked very relaxed about it !

I still have to see the new carb gubbins . . . . . .busy day on the track.

That's fine JR, I wasn't short of company (thanks all!) and yes, no point getting stressed about something I can fix...

If I ever run out of things to do I won't know what all my weekends are for. But fortunately she's a gift that keeps giving!!
