Hi all

I am thinking about building myself another good 1.5 engine to swap in. My timing gears now have a lot of play and I also have some smoking at gear changes and startup.

IF I go down this route then what options do I have now for pistons as I was thinking of a re-bore with new pistons if I am to do this properly.

However, I am NOT on an unlimited budget....

Alec

in 2016, I looked about a bit for new pistons, either standard, or oversize, when I discovered that I had a couple of knackered ones, in my spare engine. Apart from a new boxed set on German E bay, at some preposterous price,(like several hundred euros), there was very little to be had. I contacted FW Thornton as well, they couldn't help.

In the end I got a fine second hand set of standard pistons, from a V4 man in Ayrshire, that I'd done a favour for previously. Fortunately my block only needed honed.

Last year a got a set of 0.49mm oversize pistons on Ebay for £10. They look to be fine, and are my insurance for the future.

So, they are out there, but are hard to find.

Thanks Andy, as I thought. Mine are not terrible on the bore so I might get away with a hone and maybe new rings if I dont find another solution. Short of this it means a 1700 crank and pinto pistons I guess... more money!

1.5 HC pistons are really hard to come by at the moment and they're not cheap from what I hear, I think JP are the only ones making them now. 1.7 pistons are widely available and affordable (make sure you get HC ones). I have 1.7 cranks if you need one, not cheap, but if you take the cheaper 1.7 pistons into consideration perhaps not a great deal more money all in all. I also have good used timing gear sets and pistons (1.5 HC and 1.7 HL and LC) and most other engine parts. For a full engine rebuild with new parts, budget at least £1500-£2000 depending on the amount of work you can do yourself and if you need a crank (grind), balance shaft and cam. If you don't do many miles it makes sense to work with what you have if that's salvageable.

Andy: .49mm over is a really strange size, what make are the pistons?

Melle.
Could you drop me a mail with a price on the 1.7 HC pistons please. Think you already have my addy Steven.hell etc.
Don’t think my budget will allow for how I really want to go with my 1.7 crank and engine build. Also not sure if it would worth the money.
Thank you.

Melle

Two photos below.
Second photo clearly shows that it is marked 90.49

I have measured the piston with a vernier caliper, (I know a vernier gauge would be better, but I don't have one)....Seems to be 90mm, or 90.1 mm at the most.
Perhaps my errors in measuring....

Looks like there's a maker's mark right above the size? Doesn't look familiar though, but a bit hard to decipher from the pic.

I will clean the piston top up a bit more, and have another look tomorrow with a magnifying glass.

I can see "Germany", with a word above it, perhaps containing "ag".
