| A long time ago I bought what was "allegedly" a SAAB 96 tow bar, on E bay, (had forgotten about it......) I've just unwrapped it, but it doesn't look like the tow bars that I've seen on SAAB 96's. The ones I have seen are short things, just seem to bolt onto the floor of the spare wheel cavity. This one has long arms that would reach halfway up the car???? I'd have to drill holes in the car floor to fit this, not sure I want to do that! Can anyone confirm if this is a SAAB 96 tow bar??

| Hi Andy, That looks very similar to one I have on a 95 - I shall measure it tomorrow and let you know. I think I have one that you could have for the cost of postage (I can post cheap through work) - I have had in the back of my mind to try and find it since seeing your wanted post. The only thing is it is not a genuine one and I think it is designed for chrome bumper cars - I think you have rubber bumpers... I'll have a dig and a measure tomorrow. Cheers | |

| Andy Your photo looks just like the towbar I had fitted to a previous 96 (a '67 model). There were three plates that fitted inside the car - one for each of the pairs of bolts at the end of the long arms and one across the inside of the boot with four (?) bolts for the cross-member. I removed it when I disposed of the car and it sat in the shed for years until I foolishly disposed of it when I moved house. Wish I hadn't now, but that's 20/20 hindsight for you !
Regards, Derek

| Hi Andy That looks nothing like the towbar that I've temporarily removed from my 96 to reduce lower leg injuries while working on the car. I can't see any indication whether or not it's an original Saab part, but i suspect not. Will can take some pics of the parts removed from the car if it helps,
cheers Clive

| Guys. Thanks for all the input. I'm beginning to think that this may a tow bar for a 95.
I have an offer of a rubber bumper 96 towbar, from someone in Cumbria, though I'm not sure what the difference is between a rubber bumper tow bar and a chrome bumper tow bar?
Dynorog. I'll keep your offer in mind. Where are you going in the Cairngorms? I know the area well, I'm an auld hiker!

| On the rubber bumper tow bars the ball is further away from the body shell because the bumpers are thicker than the metal ones. There were many manufacturers who did tow bars for 95/96s, so there are quite a few different designs about.

| Melle Seems logical. The chap in Cumbria says that the one he has is for the rubber bumper, so all is good. The one I have appears to be for a 95.

| That looks like a towbar I have sitting in the shed for our 95. I think I also have a crossbeam type for a 96 Mr Deans if you're needing one, would need to have a rummage in the shed to see what's there.

| Well, everyday's a schoolday ! Looks like at some point a previous owner must have fitted one of these towbars, intended for a 95, to one of my previous 96s (a MY1967 in Silversand, Jim !). Worked fine too as I recall.

| Hi Andy, Sounds like you now have this sorted and sorry it's taken me a while but the following might be useful. Apologies for the terrible photos!
This pic shows the towbar on my rusty 95 and how it attaches to the floor in front of the rear axle.
This pic shows how it attaches to the boot floor at the very rear of the car.
And this is the one you can have but I don't think will fit as it bolts the rear bumper on a chrome bumper 96.
A bit difficult to see it in the last pic because it's behind some V4 inner wing cuts and I couldn't move them because that is a Beetle floorpan resting on top of everything - who said you can have too many projects!

| With a grinder and a welder anything can be made to fit...

| Sadly long gone to the motorväg in the sky ! Not sure when the small screen was discontinued, but this one had the larger screens (complete with stick-on rear demister) - the best I can do is this ...
