Have just removed the engine of my 96 to investigate various rumbling/ knocking noises. Seems to be a combination of slight rumble from fan bearing, loud rattle from water pump and wear on the two fibre timing gears (no discernable movement of balance shaft in any direction, so may take a chance and not strip down further).
Clutch release bearing worn and mounting hole in the fork has ovalled, so will change/repair them.
Will also fit new seals and check timing gear oil feed, plus oil pump etc once sump is fully off. Anything else recommended (without going overboard) ?

In the course of the engine removal, I spotted that the gearbox steady had no rubber bushes/washer and no spacer sleeve.
Does anyone have a spare set (or can post photos so I know what I'm looking for (the Spares Catalogue diagram is not v. clear) ?

Slainte !

I hope you did a compression test before removing the engine?

Definitely do dismantle the oil pump, clean it and inspect/ measure as described in the factory and Haynes manuals. If you suspect play on the timing gears, I would remove the timing cover and measure if they're still within spec. Now you have access, you could slap some paint on the block if you feel so inclined. Valve train rattle due to worn rocker shafts is also not uncommon, but that's something you could check when the engine is back in the car and the rumbling persists.

I think the only bushes you can get for the engine and gearbox steadies are at the moment PU ones (in two hardnesses, the purple ones being the softest) from Powerflex. They're expensive.

see link for bushes. The engine stabiliser has two top hat rubber bushes, but the gearbox has one top hat and a flat rubber washer. Also required two nuts, two spring washers and two larger flat washers.
Got all sorts buried in garage so will have a look to see what's available.
see PartsforSaabs.com or Powerflex directly.

Oh yes - Nos.1, 2 and 4 cylinders read the same, No. 3 cylinder quite a bit lower. To be investigated.

Woody - the 'outboard' flat & spring washers and nut were present, so I'm able to match them. It's the rubber bits and sleeve that I'm missing.
Edit: just looked up the Powerflex website, you're not kidding they're expensive - £13.45 RRP !! Jings, crivens and help ma boab !!

Have just uploaded some pics to Facebook Saab V4 pages. For the flat rubber washer a plumber tap washer might do with modification. Cant find my spares at the moment.

Thanks Woody - I'll see what Steve B has to offer when he and his site are back at work.

Think I just used an open cable grommet - been in over two year without any issues. Sandwiched between tow penny washers. A matter of pence to replace if needs be.
I did intend getting some proper ones but have never had any issues as is.

Sound like a complete tear down is on the cards then? I can highly recommend Gaskets for Classics for new gaskets/ seals.

Thanks Melle,
Yep, a far more invasive job than I had hoped. No.3 compression issue seems to be valve-related; bores look good, just need honed and a new set of rings. Crank and balance shafts are in excellent nick.
I'll give G4C a look, as recommended.
