Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a spacer between the rear hub and the brake backing plate? All of my spare axles are pretty rusty around this area, but some look as though there is a gasket or spacer (which has mostly rusted away). My new good axle (rust free) appears to have a spacer on one side but not the other.

Parts lists show a gasket between the brake cylinder and the backing plate

Great help thanks, I think it must be just rusty slivers of ancient backing plates. Will have it all back together in the next few days so I'll soon find out!

Is this for the rally 96 Gavin? If so I hope it's a 95 axle. I had a std 96 stub axle shear on me once did two 360 deg spins before I realised what had happened!!

I want to drop the rear axle out of my car this winter, to replace all the bushings, and generally clean up, de-rust, paint etc, the axle and axle tunnel.
Any tips?
I reckon it's a pretty straight forward operation, just thought there might be some pearls of wisdom, to make things easier.

Hi Geoff, yes this is going on the rally car and it's a 95. Andy you are correct, it is a fairly straightforward job to dimantle it all but be prepared for some fairly hard to shift nuts and bolts if it has been in place for a while! The centre bearing is a pig to remove as the outer sleeve will have rusted into the axle. I would just burn it out with a torch and then use a cold chisel to attack the sleeve. One tip that may be useful if you are going to retain your brake cables is to soak the grommets where they join the axle for a few days with WD or similar, again these rust in place. Leave the hanger straps until last, then when you disconnect all the bushes the axle is still partially supported until you loosen them from each side. I always recommend Rustbusters epoxy mastic paint. This is a two pack paint that can be brushed on thick for chassis components and it is very protective, the best I have found to withstand gravel rash, so likely to be very long lasting for everyday use. If you can get your axle shot blasted then this will definitely improve painting, and give you a good idea of its true condition.

Andy. I have the correct SAAB tool on my shelf for pressing/inserting the rear axle center bush. Happy to lend it to you.
