Hi All,

After replacing nearly all the suspension components and poly bushes etc to try and cure a nasty clunking noise whilst driving - all to no avail! I finally gave the calliper a wiggle and guess what it clunked back and forth!!!!

I had already check the bolts were tight but never expected the calliper to clunk about over the bottom pivot bolt! I assume the pivot bolt/pin will be worn. I have an old set of spare callipers that need restoring. Does anyone know if rebuild kist with new pistons and seals are available? Malbrads don't show any.

Any help welcomed.

Yes they are. I rebuilt mine but I’ll have to look up where I got them from.
Cheers

You can use Austin/ Morris 1100 pistons and john-saab sells excellent quality seal kits.

See here regarding the clunking: http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=34284

John-Saab also had manufactured stainless steel pistons last year, he might well have a set available. Excellent quality, we bought three sets!

TTruckie, it is worthwhile giving your calipers a thorough inspection. Check that there isn't any play at the top spring-loaded pin. The top hat shaped ferrule can bind on the fixed pin. It should move when levered so it maintains pressure against the L-shaped plate which slides against the other part of caliper assembly which is bolted to the knuckle housing. The L-shaped plate can wear as it slides back and forth.

The bottom pivot pin can wear too, the tension spring can fail due to corrosion, but more importantly the abutting faces can wear causing a rattle/clunking under braking. Also examine the areas of the caliper where the edges of the brake pads settle. These points can wear but can be carefully restored with weld and a grind/file. So far I haven't had calipers with too much wear of the mating faces at the bottom pivot area. I have just had to replace the pivot spring and c-clip.
John-Saab did have pistons made but sold all. I acquired my pistons/rubber kits from Brake Parts UK some years ago. They are the same as used in Morris 1100s as I see Melle has already mentioned..

Having read this so far I have a question re the repair kits from Skandix. Is it possible to assess whether they will do the job without stripping the Caliper and what should I look for?
