Hello Gents,

As I have time and as it was falling apart, I decided to go through the head gasket change.
This went ok so far and, after the valve set up, I found this under a spring valve :

Any chance some of you knows where this come from ? I'm a bit scared about serious issue now ...

Cheers.

I don't know how to change this.

I have never changed them with heads on.
Do you have some fancy tool or use compressed air in spark plug hole or do each with piston at tdc?

Actually, I don't have anything to fix this. I think I will put the car to a professional to have this fixed.

I have changed seals and springs once by threading some rope in through the spark plug hole and winding the engine over by hand to have the piston approaching TDC, make sure the tail is out of the hole. There was a reason, but an absolute dodge. It worked, but if you are not at least 90% confident, don't attempt!

Ok, thanks. This is why I won't be doing it myself.

I did it in-situ back in 1973 to put rally springs in. Borrowed the Saab tools from my dealer. It was troublesome even then. I was a complete Novice mind and trying to learn through doing.

I made one years ago, never used it. Still need to make the lever tool...

If you can change head gasket then you can fit new valve stem oil seals. You just need a valve removal tool. It must be quite easy if I can do it! Might as well lap the valves and seat while you’re at it. That’s easy too. Go on!

A thorough decoke is often a good idea too.

Have been thinking of making copy of the tools as we are in lock-down. I like your tool Melle, was thinking on the same lines.

Guys, thanks for the tips and messages sent. I'll see if it's possible to have it fixed easily or I will drive it like this for summer and have the engine out this winter for better fixing. Is it safe to drive with a valve stem oil seal dead ?

Not a very big deal, but don't leave it too long as you'll be burning some oil, the seals are there for a reason. If one crumbles the other ones won't be in much better condition I guess; worst case your engine ends up looking like this inside:

As said, if you need to change out the HGs anyway it's an easy job. Also, not sure what you're exactly planning to do and why, but I think it's false economy to do just one HG if one is bad. Better do both at the same time and use decent quality gaskets (Victor Reinz, Elring, Payen etc.).
