Good morning All,

Does anyone know the socket size for the Driveshaft castellated nut please.

Whilst the V4 site was down, I asked this question on the UKSaabs site and there has been some discussion. 1 5/16, 33mm or 3/4 Whitworth have been suggested but no absolute answer yet.

Thanks

James:

Check this out at www.saabnet.com>sonett bulletin board>Cv joint center nut size, Feb. 11, 2013:

nut is 1 5/16; front wheel hub torque: 130 ft-lbs.
rear wheel hub torque: 65 ft-lbs.

Also, on page 020-14 of Sonett III service manual: torques above are verified, but manual does not list size of castle nut.

Hope this helps.

Stuart

Thanks for the information elanwannabe.

Fantastic site, unfortunately I cannot find an entry for Feb 11th 2013 on the Vintage Models Bulletin Board.

I'll go with 1 5/16

Thanks
James

The Bulletin Board is a bit tricky to navigate, but the post you're after is at https://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/sonett/index.html?bID=13155 (and subsequent posts in the same thread (it's just a statement of the nut size without quoting any official authority - but accords with earlier discussion)).

Thanks for that Derek.

Looks like we are back to 1 5/16 which Andy Deans feels is too big !

Still waiting to see how he get's on with 33 mm.

Cheers
James

I can confirm that 1.5/16" AF is the correct size. There are no Whitworth fasteners on a V4, although I'm sure you can use a W or metric socket if you get stuck.

Stig

As I said across on UKSAABS, the 1 5/16" was a bit slack, (though it would have done the job, but the nut was VERY tight, and it broke the 1/2" to 3/4" drive adapter I was using. The socket is 1/2" drive, the breaker bar 3/4" drive) but I've just loosened mine with a 3/4" drive, 33 mm 6 point socket.

Needed the 3/4" drive, with a 1 metre breaker bar to free it.
It's not been on that long, I fitted new discs and backplates around 2016, but boy it was tight.
I thinks it's the tightest torque on the car at 130 lbf-ft.

Thanks Melle.

Good result Andy,

Another question :-

As the nut only lines up with the split pin at any one of six discreet positions, it is unlikely that the required torque figure will be obtained exactly at one of these positions.

Thoughts on whether the nut should be backed off slightly or tightened up to the next available position to line up the split pin ?

Cheers

Stig.
I'd back off slightly, you don't want to tighten it more, considering that the torque is a very high 130 lbf-ft.

Well, I decided to check my back brakes on the same side, since I'm in "brakes" mode.
Castle nut is 1 1/8".
All's well there, but when I torqued up to 65 lbf-ft, the hole was right behind the castle. On the front there are 2 holes, 90 degrees apart, but on the back there's only one hole....

By the time I backed off enough, there was very little torque left. Even going up to 70 - 75, still no dice.
So, out came the wee Dremel, with a mini cutting disc, a little modification tho the appropriate castle sections, job done.
Great tool the Dremel!!!

Better to face off the nut a bit or where possible the big washer under it. A quick rub down on some 240 grit could be enough. Because of the way the thread gets cut, a different nut will change the final position. Just swapping the nuts side to side might also work.

I have just received a new 3/4 Whitworth socket via 'tinternet.

I can now confirm that it is almost perfect and definitely a tighter fit than the 1 5/16 " socket previously mentioned.
7/8 " BSF also fits ( from Car 55).

Sorted !

Thanks all.
