Hello,

Slowly getting to grips with the new purchase and checking stuff over to assess jobs ahead. Thought I'd pitch this to ascertain if it's me or the carb !!

Pulling the dash mounted choke knob out, it only moves a 1/3 of its potential travel; there is a definite STOP on reaching that stage. When the accelerator pedal is depressed ever so slightly, the choke knob can then be pulled out to its maximum movement. TBH, unrestricted full movement is how I would expect a choke to normally operate.

Have to say I thought this most odd. Checking the movement of the choke & accelerator linkage at the carb body (with the air filter removed as well) I could not see anything physically preventing full movement of the choke, nor it conflicting with the accelerator assembly on the carb body.

I need to investigate further and I will be grateful for any input re the above. Having been use to various DCOE carbs over the years and not experienced this choke oddity before, it is a puzzler. Perhaps the choke operation is correct being particular to the 34ICH or more likely a conflict of parts.

Thank you in advance.

Richard.

So if you disconnect the choke cable can you move the lever on the carb to the full choke position without pressing the accelerator?
I would suspect something to do with the fast idle, perhaps a step worn in the cam that adds some throttle when the choke is pulled out?

Melle - I agree, not come across that before, thought it may be me going scatty.

Steve - Will need to try that, but ran out of time on Saturday. It almost gives the impression that it should be happening due its definitive stop. A two-stage choke but not as we know it !!

Should have an update next Saturday.

Thanks both.

Richard.

I have a DGV installed and it behaves pretty much that way. I have full movement but the choke needs a strong pull if I don't touch the accelerator.
If I pull hard on the choke lever I can actually see the accelerator pedal go down a bit. As Steve implies this has to do with the fast idle. You have to fight against the return spring for the throttle. I always believed that this was due to the rod linkage accelerator arrangement instead of a cable, but it must be due to a strong spring on the throttle return combined with high "ratio" from the choke lever on the carb. Does that make sense?
I always slightly depress the accelerator when pulling the choke. I'm pretty sure there is no wear to my choke cam, since the carb was one I fitted brand new some years back, and it's always been like that. I could be wrong though, since it is a (subpar) made in Spain Weber.

Regards, Mads

Hello Mads,

That is very useful information and certainly puts a different aspect on the issue - if perhaps it can be called that and yes certainly makes sense.

I'm glad you mentioned your experience with the the DGV, because I will using that carb when the mechanical upgrades are completed.

Will be with the car on Saturday and will look at the suggestion Steve has made bearing in mind your comments.

Many thanks.

Richard.
