Hello everyone ,

My name is Dwayne I’m from White Rock BC Canada .
Thanks for allowing me to be a part of your awesome V4 forum .
A bit about me , i’m a licensed auto mechanic who works as a mechanical troubleshooter at a bulk loading port , i’ve always been a car guy and tended to favor the European stuff , i’ve been mainly a VW guy ( please don’t hold it against me :•)
I’ve owned over 50 air cooled VW‘s from 1952 to 1979 models, also a Citroen DS21 , 2CV , Renault Caravelle , but the one car I have wanted for many years was a V4 Saab. These V4 models were never available in Canada and so extremely hard to find . Fortunately I found a 1968 96 model that is absolutely 100% rust free & original paint (rust is always my biggest concern with old cars )

Over the last 5 months I’ve currently been in the process of doing a complete mechanical restoration/overhaul on my 1968 Saab 96 .
I hope to post pictures of the process when I get some time and figure out how to post pictures .
The reason I’m posting this post at the moment is when I got the vehicle the original fan bearing had failed so the last owner removed fan and pulley and installed an electric fan . Although I know there are people who recommend using an electric fan I have rebuilt this engine to exact original specs and I don’t live in a very hot climate so in keeping with originality I sourced a fan and pulley from the UK on eBay.
When I overhauled the engine I pressed a new bearing assembly into the front gear cover so I could go back to an original belt driven fan. I have unfortunately run into a problem and I think that the fan and pulley I purchased are for a different cologne V4 vehicle
or year . The fan I bought is too large in diameter & it’s too far forward and my pulley is cone shaped it doesn’t resemble any I see online that actually have come off a Saab V4 engine . Anyways I have located the proper pulley but I am currently searching for the correct fan for my 1968 model which is one of the early V4 models that still had the old style two-stroke radiator installed in them . From the pictures I’ve seen of original 1968 V4 models what I need is the black plastic 5 bladed version of the v4 fan . I currently have the 4 blade red plastic fan and there’s no way it will work with my radiator.

Anyways if anybody here on the forum has a 1968 style ( black plastic 5 blade ) fan they would be willing to parr with I will happily buy it.

Take care everyone
And thanks for taking the time to read my ramble .

Take care

Dwayne Farmer

I’ve cut & paste a picture of the fan I’m looking for not sure if it will load or not.

Hi Dwayne,

Welcome to the forum! You probably bought the fan from me. If I'd known you were buying it for a Saab I would have told you you needed a different one! Please email your name and address to saabv4[at]saabv4[dot]com and I'll send you a black fan free of charge.

Your image doesn't show, please see here for instructions: http://www.saab-v4.co.uk/speedball/topic.asp?topic_id=604

There are (at least) two other forum members in Canada with very nice V4s.

Cheers,
Melle

Hi Dwayne,

That's quite a collection of cars you've owned in the past and the 96 you found sounds great too.

As for parts, have you tried Tom Donney at The Saab Car Museum in Sturgis, I know he's 1200miles from you, but that's still a LOT closer than the UK.

I'm sure we'll do the best we can to answer any questions you have and it would be great to see progress on your project!

Hi Dwayne

I'm one of Canada based members, (Ontario, originally from the UK) sadly I don't have a fan, but sounds like Melle is sorting you out....

Happy to help with info or parts sourcing wherever possible, Peter Carson is based in Albany Oregon and is a wealth of knowledge (and parts) he's on a few facebook groups, if you're on FB, might be worth joining

Hey I apologize if it seems like I didn’t reply or respond to your posts and I actually did almost immediately and for some reason I’ve just noticed that it never got posted so likely my technical error .
Anyways for a second time thanks so much for the responses and the warm welcome to the V4 forum.
Melle and I have connected and he is so generously going to send me the correct fan that I require.
I will try that link for posting photos as soon as I get a chance.
I’m not totally computer illiterate but I’ve only been on one other forum years ago so might be a bit of a learning curve.

Anyways thanks again and if for some reason my other post did get posted somewhere I apologize for repeating myself .

Stay safe and take care

Dwayne
