Hello,

The PO has wired up a button on the dash to operate the horn. For some reason, to be determined, the push-pad on the steering wheel does not operate the horn, hence this current alternative.

According to the Haynes manual - models up to and including 1975 - there should be 4x screws at the back of the steering which secures the horn contact bar to the safety pad and cover.

On my 1976 model, this appears not to be the case and a different assembly set-up is in place - I presume a later upgrade.

There are no visible 4x screws and the horn contact assembly consists of 3x pressure points to activate the horn, rather than the single sliding contact as shown in the manual.

The horn contact bar on my car is a solid plastic unit, but for the life of me I cannot see how the bar is removed; there are certainly no obvious screws etc. I can see the steering wheel retaining nut through a gap on the bar, so it must removable to get at that !!

Needless to say, I do not want to force / bend the horn contact bar and break it.

Hopefully the above makes sense.

If anyone can provide the clue to progress the above, I will be very grateful.

Thank you.

Richard.

Can you post a photo of your steering wheel? Sounds like an earlier wheel has been fitted, which has a different horn contact, hence the alternative button. If I'm misunderstanding you and your car has the standard steering wheel, the earth in the column is probably broken, use the search function to find old threads that discuss this issue.

Thanks Melle, will do - but not back with the car until next weekend.

I have looked at the horn push set-up for:

Up to 1967 // 68 to 70 // 1970 onwards and I presume up to 1975 - none of those match.

Could it be possible that the 96L model from 1976 onwards was equipped with a new horn design. Have to say the 3x pressure pad points for the horn, look more modern than the earlier examples.

Regards.

Richard.

Further to my last, just looked at the Saab OE WSM (page 641-5) and there is no doubt that from 1976 the horn / safety pad was modified.

The outer rubber safety padding is pulled away, this I have done. But, the pictures and wording seem to suggest that the horn contact finger plate is removed simply by lifting the unit up and away. I'm sure I tried that, but perhaps eased off when nothing was giving !!

If anyone has removed this type of horn assembly, I will be interested to read how that went.

Thank you.

Richard.

Hi I have removed the horn pad etc on a 76 car. The rubber pad comes off easily as you have found. The plastic panel underneath doesn’t feel as though it will come off but it does. If you pull as evenly as you can it takes quite a strong tug. I was convinced I would have broken something. Fortunately I hadn’t and I have repeated the process a few times.

Hi,
Recently removed mine, the centre of the three electrical contacts has a plastic surround that locates the plastic part.
If you pull in that area it will come off, in the unlikely event you brake it I now have a spare,

Good luck,

Barry

Hello Wonky door and Barry,

Thanks ever so much for the update and most timely, as I will be spending some of Saturday working on the car; of which accessing the horn connections is on the list.

Regards.

Richard.

Steering wheel changes to the new "rubber" type mid MY75. Same time as the "rubber" bumpers.
Mine is an early 75 but had been fitted with the new type steering wheel before I bought it. I like the old steering wheel better so decided to mount this again. This revealed that the horn brush/brass-ring is opposite on the older wheel.
On the new rubber wheel the setup is more traditional with the brush mounted on the steering wheel and the brass ring mounted with a screw to the column. On the older type the brass ring is on the wheel hub itself and the brush is mounted to the column.
I was able to source the bits from an older car so mine works fine now.
I have kept all the bits from the new type system, since if I want to mount an aftermarket sports steering wheel, this is much easier to get working. The sports-wheel-hub I have is all metal, so you would have to isolate the brass ring some way or you would have the horn permanently on.

Regards, Mads
