| Has anyone got a spare, functioning, fuel gauge sender for a 96?

| Melle. Thanks mate. This is not for me, but for my best mate. He's just bought an absolute mint, very original, nicely refurbished 96 from 1975. His fuel gauge doesn't work, a quick switch with my one proved it was the sender unit.

| Good morning, I had a similiar issue when I rebuilt my 96 back in 2000 and an auto electrician removed the sender and gently cleaned the pick up and resistor wires with fine emery and sorted it. Always worth a try. | |

| Definitely worth a try, but I've never had much luck cleaning them (I'm not claiming any expertise on auto electrics though!). I've tried emery, vinegar and salt, and an ultrasonic bath on various senders, and although all these methods made them work again, a few months later the issue would return. Usually they read "full" and "empty" (including the warning light) OK, but are very patchy in between, as if the wire isn't conductive any more in places. Currently my gauge reads anywhere between 3/4 and 1/2 full no matter how much fuel is in the tank, until the tank is almost empty and then it works as it should.
