Hello,

Engine out today and all went well - thank you for the earlier answers to my various questions.

I did note that when pulling the engine away from the g/box, within the engine bay, that the g/box slid forward a few inches as well. It seems to have slipped its holding position, that being the bush mounted at the rear / bulkhead.

The g/box is staying put whilst the engine is out, but should I relocate the g/box spigot in to the bush or can it remain as is ?? I cannot see anything straining, but thought I would ask for advice.

The front of the g/box is currently supported on a wood block.

Any guidance, appreciated.

Thank you.

Richard.

I don't think the box should move forward. It's bolted at the back into a large rubber bush. The rubber part might allow a very small amount of movement, but not much.
Did you remove the bolt at the back of the gearbox, accessible from inside the car, beneath the carpets. A couple of obvious grommets, up where your left foot would approximately, be when driving, one large, one small?
If you did not remove this bolt, and the box moved forward quite a bit, I suspect that the back bushing has perhaps disintegrated.
Have a look and see what you can see through the access hole inside the car.
The bushing is available, but it's not cheap.
If it's gone, you'll obviously have to hoik the box out.
It's quite easy, once that rear bushing has been released.
You do not have to remove the drive shafts.
Once the gearbox stay is removed, a bit of wiggly, jiggly, to one side, then the other, to free the drive shafts, will get the box out.
Be VERY careful not to lose the needle roller bearings on the two shaft ends on each side. Often they will come apart as you pull things out, and all the little needles fall out, and are easily lost.

I've done it several times over the years
A good chance to chance to degrease, clean and paint your lower engine bay!!!!

ps Where exactly are you?

Hello Andy,

Thanks for your comprehensive reply - very interesting and I am very glad I asked !!

I had assumed the g/box would stay in situ whilst easing the engine away from it; as you have read that was certainly not the case.

No g/box bolt(s) were removed as the intention was engine removal only. Reflecting upon this, there has been some poor "work" / short cuts carried out on the car prior to my ownership. I wonder if this is another example whereby the g/box has not been secured correctly. What ironic is that the PO had worked carried out on the g/box plus linkages etc and one might be forgiven to assume that correct refit occurred. From your description there has to be doubt on this now.

From what I can see behind the box, with the aid of a mirror, the back bush assembly looks new.

Am I right in thinking that the back bush assembly needs to be fitted first, then the g/box positioned & located correctly and then finally secured via the access points in the footwell - you have mentioned ??

Further examination certainly needs doing !!!

Indeed, a great time to sort the engine bay.

I am in East Sussex, not far from Lewes.

Thank you, once again.

Richard.

I always undo the rear gearbox bolt when I remove an engine, also if I leave the box in situ. If you haven't loosened or removed the bolt, there is a chance the internally threaded "tail" has snapped off the box when lifting it/ the engine. Or maybe there wasn't a bolt in the first place?

Thanks Melle,

I can certainly see the spigot protruding from the rear of the g/box and that certainly appears to be in good order. There is no doubt it has pulled away form the back bush.

Viewing through the bulkhead grommets should hopefully give some more clues; although no garage time until Tuesday - will report back then.

Regards.

Richard.
