This hasn't happened to me before, but the ignition key won't turn to the left when I put the car in reverse.

The car is in reverse, I started it up to prove it.

Any thoughts?

Adjusting the twist stop slightly will probably resolve it, see workshop manual section 641-14. Don't attempt to do this with anything other than a decent quality 3/16" allen key. You may need to slacken the steering column adjustment bolts (1/2" spanner) first and adjust that if it's stuck in reverse.

Thanks Melle!

Just read that page and I imagine I'll have to read it several more times before I understand it!

It was working perfectly (ie: engage reverse, take out key), however I did move the car using the starter (as it was struggling to start and I needed to move the car), so perhaps something moved!?

On a related note (and not something that I was actually working on at the time), I'm struggling to engage (or even find) 3rd and 4th gear. I've tried adjusting the mechanism (normally fairly easy to sort out). And it seems I need to do this before adjusting the twist stop - as the manual recommends doing this AFTER you've adjusted the gear positions.

Other than trial and error (ie: adjusting the mechanism back and forth), is there a good starting point, ie: fully back or fully forward or somewhere in the middle?

Yes, definitely adjust the column first (I always rely on trial and error), that may sort it and you may not need to adjust the twist stop. Adjusting the twist stop isn't very difficult (same level of difficulty as adjusting the column), the instructions are just very poorly worded and make it sound way more complicated than it is. A picture and a warning not to use a 4.5mm or other ill fitting allen key would probably suffice!

I just did the adjusting of the gear change on my mates 96. He was getting 1st and 2nd, but not reverse 3rd or 4th.
The column was fixed around the centre, so having slackened the two 1/2 inch bolts, and simply pushed the whole assembly down as far as it would go, and bingo! all gears working normally.

Can't really help you with the problem of getting the key out. As Melle has said, the instructions in the manual are probably not that well written.
My mate had the same problem, but we got a mutual SAAB Guru from Edinburgh to sort it out for us.

My 96 needs the gear leaver putting in reverse then lifting towards neutral slightly, then the key will turn the rest of the way and come out. Since everything else works fine I just put up with it. Just in case the same solution might work for you.
Joe.

You should be able to fix that by adjusting the twist stop Joe, it's really not that difficult.

I should say that our SAAB Guru found that the allen heads on the allen screws that are used to adjust the twist stop, were worn badly, so thing were hard to adjust, because of it. My mate gets his key out by putting the car in 1st, instead of reverse.
