Hello,

Spent the day stripping the drivers door and the outside window weather strip will need replacing. At first I thought the PO may have shaped a universal weather strip, as the rubber trim narrows as it slants upwards to corner of the window, adjacent to the door mirror to give a point of reference.

However on looking, it appears that this was a purpose made rubber strip by Saab - as one would expect. I imagine no longer possible to get.

As such, has anyone used an alternative weather strip to complete this job ?? The OE strip is an unusual design having a separate securing channel along its entire length - this is the bit that fits onto the metal strip closest to the outside of the window.

The inner window trim edge is not a problem as this can be obtained via Woollies and is the correct size plus profile.

It's the outer window weather strip that is the teaser, at the moment.

Any advice, gratefully received.

Thank you.

Richard.

Thank you, that's most helpful.

I sometimes wonder if it might be cheaper to go over to say the NL, with a comprehensive shopping list of parts. What you save on postage etc will pay for the travel expenses !!

Certainly worth considering.

Regards.

Richard.

Happy to bring stuff over from NL next time I go by car (most likely not earlier than summer).

That's a very kind offer Melle, thank you.

I will certainly bear that in mind; much appreciated. Have you been to their premises before ?? Looking at the map, its almost on the German border.

Best wishes.

Richard.

No, never visited, but bought parts from them before. There are loads of classic Saab specialists and (new and used) parts dealers in NL, not all have a good reputation, but this one certainly does. Best to avoid "Swedish Car Parts" in Soest if you can.

This thread has got me thinking: my passenger side door window strip has a permanent fold in it: these folds appear when you wind the window down and then straighten out when you wind it back up again, but I think at some stage in its previous life the window must have been left down for a long time and the fold is now permanent, so I don't think it makes a great seal.
I did try to soften it with silicone spray but to no effect. Can anyone think of a way of reforming it, or softening it up?
If that's not possible then I'll be on the hunt for a new strip. I saw Jack Ashcraft had them listed on his website: http://www.subrew.com/jackashcraft/saabweatherstrip.html I'm assuming it's Part 4373, Door Glass Wiper Seal, $79 both sides, no doubt same again for delivery from the USA. Richard, if you're looking for the driver's side then we could maybe split a pair between us, whether from Jack Ashcraft or SaabParts in NL?

You might find glycerine to be more effective than silicone spray.

The Ashcraft seals are an overpriced generic profile that any rubber place will sell you by the metre for a few quid, not a copy of the original moulded Saab part.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the OE Saab window seal is a specific made part; it's quite detailed for rubber trim - that being the centre locating strip. I've not seen anything close to it past or present.

I'd only go for the Saab Parts strip which I know will be spot on. I did note on the driver + pax door that each strip was about 10mm short of a full length, it certainly looks to have been fitted correctly in the past. It could be down to shrinkage but unlikely or the lengths were incorrect to begin with. These details are important and even more so when buying from overseas - it's not that straightforward returning stuff.
I will need both door trims, Joe, not just the driver side. Appreciate the offer and gesture, very kind.

With regard to Jack Ashcraft stuff - I would have at least expected a proper photo of the part to examine or perhaps that's the idea about taking pot luck with his stuff.

Regards.

Richard.

I bought a load of seals from Ashcraft when I first got my 96. They were all advertised as "better than original", so I was very disappointed when I received a box full of generic stuff that I could have bought around the corner for a lot less. To give an example, I paid €35 (£30-ish) for door and quarter light seals for two cars from a local rubber supplier (admittedly 10 years ago, but still).

In essence, Melle, a bit of a con. Not sure how such folk can sleep a night, knowing that the parts sold & supplied are not fit for purpose.

It's at times like this that the true value of a Forum presents itself, along with folk who can speak with confidence and knowledge - that really is a priceless commodity.

Regards.
