| to Melle Melle, am trying to make up a hall ignition as per. your first class project on the subject. I can't get hold of the 7 pin to 3 pin cable that runs between the module and the dizzy. Have you any idea where I can get one?
Regards John-Ayr |

| Melle, am going to make up a lead as I can't get one anywhere. Will 0.5 single core be O.K.? John -ayr

| Hi John, I would recommend multi core cable as it will be subject to movement and vibration,
Cheers,

| I don't know much about electronics, so can't advise on wire gauge really. I do happen to remember that the brown (earth) lead is a bit more substantial than the others, perhaps 1 or 1.5 and the rest 0.5 or 0.75? I'll have a look later and see if I have a loom here I can check.

| Many thanks Barry, don't think I can get 0.5mm in multi core, perhaps 0.75 would do. Thanks also Melle, I am putting you to a lot of trouble!! John-Ayr. | |

I should have written a clearer manual I suppose!

| I just had a look at the Volvo loom I have here. Looks like some of the wires are 0.5, others 0.75 and the earth 1.0. I'm not sure what is what though, because the colour coding differs from the VAG loom in my diagram, and some of the wires in the Volvo one may not relate to the ignition. Perhaps you can find a VW Golf/ Audi 80 workshop manual though Google? VAG cars had a separate ignition loom, which should make it easy to isolate the relevant wires from the other stuff in a diagram. Wiring diagrams usually specify wire colour and gauge.
EDIT: I've asked on RetroRides if anyone there happens to have a diagram or wire gauge spec. Will update here if/ when I get any info.

| Well, this is embarrassing, someone on RetroRides told me it's all in the Saab 900 Bentley Manual. It never crossed my mind to check my stack of 900 workshop books, I even have the official factory manuals!
This is directly quoted from him, I haven't looked myself yet:
1. 2.5 to the supply terminal where the feeds branch off 2. 1.5 Coil wires 3. 0.5 hall sensor wires 4. 1.0 power to the ignition module 5. 1.5 earth for the ignition module

| No problem at all, always happy to contribute to the knowledge of the collective. When I have time, I'll have a look at the 900 manuals myself, and update the guide on my website as well at some point with all the great information others have supplied.

| Melle, have got my lead made up for the hall unit and have purchased an "ignition control unit" with 7 pins. Am not clear what this does. Do I still require to have bob weights and springs in place in the dizzy, or does this unit handle the advance instead. Regards, John-Ayr. | |
