nice, I agonized over these versus re-chroming my originals, but went with the latter - looking at yours close up, I'm now jealous!

Yes you were right and your rubber overriders will be just the job. Unfortunately you cannot order just the bumpers without overriders to reduce costs but I may keep the harrington overriders for stock but I very much doubt I will have another 96 . Once this one is done funds need to be diverted to a new roof, kitchen extension etc. One really nice boat and one really nice 96 plus the 9000 Aero are toys enough for me. Oh apart from my son's Scalextric!

I am working my way through various bits in the evenings, to make ready for painting.
Sand paper, and a Dremmel do the job well, cleaned up with Carburettor cleaner as it doesn,t leave a film like white spirits!

Still working on the underside and wheel arches, it,s taking ages, probably two days so far just on each wheel arch. It comes down to micro, methodical work rubbing back each rust spider!

I am going to try this POR-15 Hardnose stuff today. It comes in grey as per the original underside colour and it"s chip proof, just hope it doesn,t show brush strokes too much. You wouldn,t use it if you had any doubts you had not stopped the rust of course as you will never be able to get at it again easily once it is on.

Beware..don't get it on your skin...it sticks like poo to a blanket and will take weeks to get it off.
For the metal parts...If they are grease free i highly recommend Bilt Hamber Deox-C..leave it to soak in a plastic bucket and it will remove every trace of rust BUT the metal needs to bee 100% grease free.

I can second John's Deox-C recommendation, used it for the first time this week to de-rust >100 year old lathe parts and they came out like new. I used Evaporust before, but Deox-C is at least as effective and much cheaper. Whichever you use, make sure your parts are fully submerged.

Great work and a very time consuming process.

Thanks for the tips. I have never been much of a fan of marine clean (which those bits have been in overnight, an old bottle from 15 years ago may not help! But it wasn.t that impressive the first time I used it) it is no substitute for physically digging/grinding etc the surface rust off so will try the Bilt Hamber stuff.

I wasted a morning looking at a 96 so painting will have to wait until the weekend.

The tricky bit now is deciding on what to paint the engine and ancillaries if at all! The engine enamel is going to be gloss unfortunately but they don,t make a matt black so hope it is not too glossy. I am not sure about some of these metal coloured paints for alternators, fuel/water pumps etc. I need to see them in the flesh. I need a matt black for the engine brackets, rocker covers etc also. Standards and products have improved since 20 years ago!

You realise once you start this you have to go the whole hog otherwise other bits look so crap! I may have to wait until Swedish Day and look under bonnets rather than rush it and get it wrong after all the prep.

You can't get it "wrong" as long as you think it's right. ;)

It,s not about taste Melle, more about seeing what' others have used that I like. Ordering these cans at £15 a time and then not liking the result would be a pricey way of doing it. Also I quite like the look of unpainted heads, my paint has pretty much all peeled off and it looks fine but seeing what others have done and getting ideas would be handy. I want to look in one engine bay in particular, get your bonnet open Wally . I,ll be taking notes

This is the last one I did back in 1999 (that long ago, yikes!) and I would change quite a few things and improve on others.

Like Betsy67 I've always wondered what those corners are supposed to look like!

I don't think anything was ever painted in Matt Black. It doesn't keep clean very well and Satin Black isn't much better. There are low gloss blacks like Eastwoods/Frosts Under Hood black. That is good as there are a lot of solids in it too, so goes on well. I like Simoniz Tough Black which is similar and cheaper. Good deals on that on eBay but you can try one can first. Simoniz do a Matt Black engine enamel if you really must have it. I used VHT gloss black engine enamel on the valve covers. Heat and oil resistant so IMO good for the job, also easy to clean.

I powder coated my valve covers as I kept finding the paints I was using kept flaking off (or chipping too easily) the powder coat has stay on and still looks great
