Well I have bottled out of using the 'Harnose Paint' this morning. I just don,t think it will give a good brushed on finish and the trouble is I don,t think you can test it. Once the tin has been opened and especially mixed with the hardener it will go off! I need to get everything prepped before I open the tin. If only there was a similar hard grey paint I could spray on with aerosol ideally but I think I am heading towards getting a compressor spray kit. I wonder what those electric gravity spray guns are like?

So in the meantime I have just put on a grey primer with a rattle can until I have done more research. I also need to take off the Dinitrol I did on the other side as I now want a hard paint, brushed on if I have to but I don,t fancy painitng on 'Hardnose Paint' upside down under the whole of the car. There must be a hard paint you can spray on. It is especially around the front jacking point area where stones may get thrown up from the front wheels. It could do with a little mad flap there really.

Looking good. Quite expensive using rattle cans ?
I hope you go through a similar distress to myself ! Namely where to draw the line between a good tidy and wanting a complete strip down. As you've stated before 'once you've done one bit, everything else looks untidy'.
Keep on the attack

Attacking away, it only took 20 mins to get the Dinitrol off with white spirits and a pair of my wife's knickers (will put them in the washing machine and get them back in her knicker draw before she notices ).

But this Lexus import straight from Japan, (after the addition of bling wheels and diamond encrusted gear knob and door lock) has just come in so need to get on with that first. It won,t take very long, they are usually mint coming from Japan, no rust at all. It really is worth importing them if you like that kinda motor

They do a POR15 in a rattle can..direct paint to metal with the same protection as the brush on stuff. It's not cheap.

'73 96 (Vernon),'74 95 (Veronica)plus 4 other 95's and 2 96's

Will look that up John thanks, I need grey which is proving tricky in POR-15.

They only do it in black but many thanks for that, that will come in handy for engine mount brackets etc . £18 per can is not too bad from Frosts and maybe able to get it cheaper elswhere.

Too funny!!

I'm still going through all the kid's baby-grows, nice and soft rag cloth due to being washed 8000 times!

Well wire wool, and pan scrubs just got clogged up but knickers did three quarters of the area no problem

Bit more stripped out of engine bay today.

Slow going today, it has taken 3.5 hrs to finsh the other wing off and do a trial run of engine enamel paint... oh dear it,s a bit too shiny for my liking. I would like a matt engine paint.

If the engine is shiny then the rocker covers, engine brackets etc would need to be the same! This is the first coat it may dry less shiny but doubt it. Might be ok once it has got a bit of oil and road dirt on it

No have to re think this one, just tried putting another engine enamel coat on and the brush strokes are terrible! So I have stopped quickly and wiped it off. I was warned about this and the gloss so need to find out if there is a matt enamel in a spray can or I will get some spray equipment in!

This pics I have seen of the original engines are more matt and the paint left on my engine is not shiny.

Mind you shiny doesn,t look that bad

Is this the yellow 95 engine bay?

Yes you have to respect the attention to detail, not keen on the Ford stickers however.

Just done this bit with a beer before the Sunday roast...Take back to bare metal as much as possible. The Dremmel got rid of the last brown areas before the acid conversion treatment. A knotted wire angle grinder gets the most off.

Dinitrol Converust, wear a proper mask with this stuff!

Primer.

Good chance the brush strokes would have disappeared if you'd left the paint alone for a while.

The paint was setting too quickly Melle. I am going to have another go in a minute but don,t fancy doing the timing gear cover in it. It really needs a spray!

Not on paper but in practice yes. Stuff like Ku Rust is about 7% acid (only two manufactures make all the water based products in the UK) and this spray is 5% but as it is epoxy based not water based is much more aggressive! It will strip porous paint if you have any overspray and will eat your lungs. It provides a very good barrier in it,s own right BUT it is extremely expensive.

£24 for a small 400ml aerosol can that does not go very far as opposed to about £12 for the water based 1000ml bottle which as you know with water based acid convertors last for ever. One will do a quarter of a car the other probably 40 cars.

I tend to use the aerosols as it is quicker, is a better barrier and can get into places I cannot get a brush into and the client pays for it . They want a top job and this provides that.
