| That's great John! Even though they're cheap and easy to replace, checking (and mostly replacing) them before every MOT is one of my pet hates with the 95/96. If they're split and you don't have new ones at hand it might be better to leave them off for the MOT. Most testers used to modern vehicles will not notice them missing, but they always spot split boots in my experience.

| Me too, see above pic. To be fair, they're probably 30 years old and in better condition than the cheap copies to the right that have been on a car for only a year!

MOT is looming for my 96 and the gaiters I fitted for the last MOT have of course split by now. Did you get any further with having silicone ones produced?

| Just ordered new ones, will try soaking them in vaseline before fitting and report back with result when the 96's 2019 MOT is due.

| Vaseline and rubber aren't good bed fellows but I doubt if there is much rubber in the composition of these now. Maybe silicone grease inside and out? A short spray of silicone now and then to keep things fresh? | |

That's true for natural latex rubber and some synthetic rubbers like EPDM. However, seen their very poor weather resistance, I suppose these boots are made out of nitrile, which should be OK with grease. I'm not a fan of silicone grease because it contaminates everything around it, which can cause problems for future paint jobs etc. Apart from that, silicone spray cans may well contain solvents that damage rubber. As far as I know, nitrile is not very resistant to solvents. This is all from memory, please correct me if I'm far off.
