I have inadvertently started a project - “Project Dilemma”
I purchased WMJ 140K in 2011 with 79K on the clock and a fair bit of provenance and she was “rebuilt” in 1986 with quite a few receipts to back this up.
My intention was just to slowly improve her and in parallel I purchased a cheap engine with the intention of when I retired, building a 1700 upgraded engine over a period of time, probably years.
I drove her infrequently to the odd local show and a few other trips when the weather was good.
Eventually I bought some silicone hoses and a water pump but never got around to getting the jobs done due to work pressures etc.
Through lack of use gaskets and seal dried out and various oil leaks developed so I thought I would get stuck in and take the engine out and sort the sump gasket hoses etc. at the same time – this is what I found:-

So Suprise Suprise ! things are going further than I expected.
More to follow with questions I need to ask.

That's a failure I've not seen to that extent before! Looking like a big job! Well extensive anyway. Is that the engine you were driving with?

Quite common failure on V4s, last one I did had no white metal left in both front and rear balance shaft bearings. Engine still ran quite OK! The bearings themselves are not cheap, but replacing them is rather straightforward if you have/ borrow/ make a set of drifts.

I assumed (silly that) that I was looking at a crank bearing! Next stupid comment still to come!

Not at all a stupid comment; when I first bought a 96 I didn't even know there were bearings in the engine.

This is the first Saab I have owned let alone driven, except for another one I was looking at buying in 2011 – a “rat rod” and dog rough.
1972 was a long time ago so I couldn’t really remember what cars of that era were like but it did sem a bit rough on tickover.
I think I may also need to use another balance shaft, the one I have taken out is a bit scored and with a blue hue to it.

Can someone please tell me how to stop all the http stuff appearing when I upload the photos ?

you just need the 'img' section of the link, here it is in CAPS to illustrate what I mean, if I changed the 'IMG' at the beginning and end of the link - to 'img' it would show the image. So for illustrative purposes, this is the section you need...

hope that makes sense...

When you copy the link from photobucket, delete the script before the [IMG]and the script after the second [IMG], change the IMG to img in both and job done.
Have the journals checked for wear with a micrometer on the balance shaft. Have had this with a standard engine and the journals weren't damaged. The groove with varying depth is standard.

Welcome to the forum. This is the place for photos and all questions.
The most valuable resource, besides here, is to get access to a Saab Workshop Manual, which can be downloaded from www.saabV4.com.
I was given a photocopy back in 1973, when as a novice I needed to learn the mechanics of the vehicle I was preparing to rally. It gave me the confidence to have a go at stripping the engine as I had blown the head gaskets.
Your journey is just beginning....

Thanks all for the photo advice and John for the Fix perhaps you could now fix the engine!
The first thing I bought after the car was a Saab WSM.
I have checked the journal size of the balance shaft they are as Follows
Front 50.81 Rear 53.98 so both on the lower end tolerance.
I have another shaft which looks less scored with no blueing with and 50.82 the front and again 53.98 rear so I think I might get away with that one.

Well this is how far I have got with the engine and now the Dilemma kicks in:

Pleas ignore the hole in the garagedoor, that's another project!

How far to go now I’ve reached this stage?
Replace camshaft bearings?
Whip out pistons and crank inspect and replace?
Re-bore to oversize and fit new rings?
New steel timing gear?
I have 2 skimmed re-valved heads already.
Try and find a 1700 crank and develop on that, with pinto pistons etc?
Try and find Webber manifold for a 28/36 DCOE which I have?

Any thoughts?

It's possible that I may have a manifold available for you Dynorog. Bought a while back for the car I have yet to find.

If you decide to go down the re-bore road, I believe that oversize pistons are very hard to come by.
Bear this in mind.

Well a few more bits dismantled:
[/img}]

All 3 cam bearings are shot.

Pistons, cylinders big ends and mains don't look too bad but thrust bearing is wearing quite a bit.

I'll now take stock and decide which way to go.
Thanks Andy comment noted.
Rhys, Please pm me and let me know how much for the manifold.
I'm not far from you.
Cheers
