| Hi All, Has anyone considered fitting twin exhausts to the 96 having the left and right cylinders separate. Does anyone know of a reason not to,
Cheers. Barry |

| I have fitted a twin exhaust on my '77 96 convertible using standard 96 exhaust pipes and silencers. Made a hole on the left side of the front box and welded a short pipe adapter on it, and cut & mirrored the rear part of the pipe.

| The connecting pipe on the Highgate system is to balance out the exhaust pulses from both sides. In theory it gives less resistance to the gasses than not having it, in practice it probably makes little difference but it is quite common on Vee engines with twin pipes. It needs to be as close to the cylinder heads as possible to be effective . I got a bespoke twin pipe system made for my Sonett and it does have a balance pipe crossing just behind the sump.
For a 96 it is probably easier and cheaper just to buy a Jetex system but if you wanted a bespoke system made I can point you in the direction of the guy that did mine - he made a brilliant job of it.

| Thanks for you input guys. Great look Geoff, yours looks just as I envisaged, what size tube did you use ? According to a web search 38mm should be more than adequate for the 96's power output,
Cheers. Barry | |

| Mine was a 2" dia as I am intending to put some big valve heads on and already run it on a twin weber carb. However a smaller dia would be OK and I believe Jetex do silencers and pipes in 1.75" or 45mm dia so you could get bits from them and make up a system. The down pipes are the tricky bit and mine were fabricated by Jonathon at Station Motorsport, Market Harborough. Looking at the pipes from the cyl head through the floor pan you would never guess that they were fabricated - like I said he is a wizard at welding. I chose aluminised steel rather than stainless but had the option of either - I always think the stainless pipes being thinner sound a bit tinny but just personal preference. The system is several years old now but not suffering corrosion or anything. It is a bit noisy so I am thinking of installing two Jetex mufflers (the thin round silencers) under the floor before the rear box- must be getting old!! | |

| I might well make a system up when winter comes. I am fortunate to have access to machine tools and friends who may be persuaded to weld for me, Thanks again, Barry | |

| Hi Peter, She's fine, just had a little bit of welding done and I am currently re-carpeting. While I was underneath I was looking at the exhaust and thought how easy it would be to fit twin exhausts. She also now sports a towbar and door mirrors. Nice to hear from you, hope all well. Barry | |

| Good to hear she's still treating you well Barry. Twin exhaust would be something else. Mirrors are a sensible upgrade as at least you have a chance of seeing what's coming up behind you on dual carriageways. Had a few near misses myself that way. Just left a deposit on a 9000 today which needs a bit of sprucing up. This'll be the third Saab since the 96 was sold. Just can't help myself!!

| I know Andy. Some day. Then I could be like Zagato and Peter Christy. Once I get it home I'll put a thread up on UKSaabs and Retro Rides. | |

| You definitely need to connect the two pipes. Not only do they sound really weird without the balance pipe, but the performance is dire. Dad tried it about 40 years ago. Never again...

| My 96 had a Highgate system on it when I bought it. It sounded great - just like a big Mustang - but it was incredibly NOISY! I'm getting deaf in my dotage, and even I couldn't take it, and replaced it with a Jetex! It did have that lovely V8 waffle, though!
My Jetex is getting on a bit now, and I'm not sure how much longer it will last - must have been on there 7 years now! I've been toying with the idea of having a twin system fabricated - like the Highgate, but quieter! Back when I had a big V8 powered car, I had a stainless exhaust made specially for it. It was cheaper than the Ford mild steel official exhaust! The company was called Cheesemans: http://www.cheesmanproducts.co.uk/
They are based in Aldershot, and their workmanship is superb! However, a bit far for me, now I've relocated to the far South-West.....!
