I'm struggling to refit the CV joint to the driveshaft, as when I get most of the locking ring into the groove, the other end always pops out. Is their a knack, or do I need to get/make a special tool?
It is a struggle to do without assistance. Saab had a special set of pliers which compressed the spring within the grove to aid installation of the driveshaft into the cv joint. It can be done without by using two flat blade screwdrivers with the joint mounted in a vice and an assistance pressing down on the drive shaft and tapping end with a block of wood at the appropriate moment.
My method is to feed one end in..then gently add pressure to the other side..still keeping the already located side in place..follow the clip around with a flat bladed screwdriver...if it won't feed in you are pressing to hard..if it pops out you need to try harder. It takes a bit of "deep breathing" while working but it works for me.

I took the snap ring off, gently squeezed it a bit in the vice, but it back on the shaft and it all went back together first attempt. Thanks for your replies
