I wanted to undo the nuts from inside the boot of the rear shock absorber. Is this best done with the wheel still on, or with the car jacked up and wheel off. I am doing the latter anyway to replace the axle strap, whilst supporting the axle. It is just to check for any rust and treat the hole passing through the body. Apologies, I asked this question years ago, it,s taken me this long to do it . Presume the shock just pushes down!

Rear wheel on or off as it doesn't matter as long as you can undo the lower nut. Start inside of the boot. You may have to hold against the threaded spindle (should have a flattened bit on the spindle for this purpose) then undo the two nuts and pull off the washer and rubber. Secondly, undo from the axel and drop the unit. I assume you refer to a 96 and not a 95 which, unconverted has a cantilever damper.
