| Is the 96 supposed to have an engine earth strap?
The reason why I’m asking is that a) I can’t see one and b) once warm, Betsy takes some starting, due to a low turnover speed on the starter.
I’ve not checked anything else - charging etc, but thought that an earth cable missing could be a quick and easy fix.

| Yes.
There's a flat braided cable that runs from the battery -ive terminal, it's bolted to edge of battery tray then to an engine/gearbox bell housing bolt.

As a trial you could use a jumper cable just to check. If the starter weren't such a PITA it may be worth checking that it has clean contact between housing and the mounting areas? | |

| I recently overhauled two starters, simple job really. The main issue with them was a build up of grime on the inside. I completely stripped and cleaned them and I also replaced most of the bearings and seals while I was at it.

| | Not a comment for Melle. I've seen "rebuilt" starters that have been painted all over. Remember that the face that bolts up to the block must be bare metal to earth it to the block. When rebuilding an engine, this face can get spray painted too. Not good. | |

| Good tip Derek. Reminds me of a 95 I've broken that had a cork gasket between the starter and the bellhousing, the stud and bolt wrapped in PTFE tape and nylon washers under the nut and the bolt head. No idea how that could have worked; the engine was seized so I haven't tried starting it. I've indeed spray painted my recent overhauls, but I've masked off the contact faces.

| Ah! Good point regarding painting the starter motor; I've just painted mine and installed it...getting that lower bolt tightened involved some swearing! Now, I didn't paint the mating 'collar' of the motor but I did grease it, I don't think that would affect the earth would it?
That brings me to the main question I have;
I'm moving the battery to the boot...so I shall naturally earth to an area of the body nearby...so in order for the starter to work I will need to earth the block/and/or gearbox back to the body, yes?

| If you have moved the battery to the boot you might also have removed the battery tray The earth strap from the tray to the engine can be remade from the engine to the bulkhead and the circuit will then be back to normal. No harm in adding an extra earth as long it is a good metal to metal contact. Make sure you use a large section cable from the battery to the starter to minimise voltage drop. Use a correct HD crimper for the connections.

| Yes, I've removed the battery tray and used proper heavy duty cable for the battery to starter connection. I filled the new connector to the starter with solder. I shall use the old battery to block earth strap to connect block to body.
