I took a stone hit on my windscreen last week, and the screen is to be replaced next week.
National Windscreens are coming to my house at the end of the week to fit a new screen.

I'd like to remove the old broken screen in advance of the windscreen man coming, so that I have time to check for corrosion around the hidden parts of the body, around the windscreen, and fix as necessary.

I've had, in the past, had a lot of hassle to get the screen to seal, ie I have pumped a lot of windscreen sealant into the rubber to body, and rubber to glass, around the screen. I'm thinking this might make it hard to get the old screen out.

What exactly is the technique to get the screen out? Start pushing at the corners? Given that the screen is already broken, take a rubber mallet to it?
Any thoughts appreciated.

Andy

If you’re putting in a new seal ? I would cut the old seal out. I use one of the knives with the break off blades. Extend the blade and slide it in along the flat of the glass.
If you’re wanting to salvage the seal ( new rubbers aren’t cheap ) that’s a bit different- especially with a cracked screen. With a windscreen I tend to sit on the front seats and give it a push with my legs, feet spread evenly near the top. Once you have an edge out the rest will follow easily. Worthwhile having someone on the outside just in case it pops out quicker than expected ( got the T shirt on that one ! ) A piece of thin plywood - enough to flex to the curve and cut to the shape of the screen would be very good- if the screen does crack at least you’re not going to be missing any limbs.
Easy enough to put back in if you fancy trying it ?

Thanks for information.
I would prefer to save the seal if I can. A new one costs £86....

It's an insurance job, so they have instructed National Windscreens to supply the screen, and fit it.

Hi Andy if you haven’t already done it the following may help. Carefully prise the little cover from the choke trim to expose the ends. If you have a plastic tool the right size use it to prize the end of the trim up so you can pull it out. Washing up liquid willl ease the job. If you have something plastic to get one corner of the screen out the screen should then push out if you use your feet from inside as per previous post. I’ll see if I can find what we use around glass and email it you.
Cheers Dave

Hi Andy
I just take out the plastic trim, sit on the two front seats peel the rubber back off the headliner gently push with my feet across the top to loosen it, eventually it just pops out at the top, pretty much as mentioned earlier but make sure you peel the rubber back to loosen it with the feet method.

So is it out Andy? If it is I hope you remembered to put something over the nice blue paintwork.

Thanks for your input guys. Hope to do this job on Tuesday or Wednesday. What worries me is the amount of sealant I know has gone in there. Both Frosts, and a Shell sealing product Melle put me on to. Neither sets, as such, stays soft, so hopefully should not be too much of a problem.

I've just taken the screen out of mine - and it was a PITA geeting it in there in the first place, so I went very carefully.

I used a flat head screwdriver to work the rubber from the inside - prising up and tucking it back on the other side of the metal lip. I started from the middle and worked my way out to the edges - it wasn't easy and the flipping thing kept untucking itself, but after doing the top edge, followed by the bottem edge and then the sides, it popped right out! Which was a relief as it's the smaller screen and I really didn't want to break it!

You could always heat up the rubber with hot water or a hairdryer - this might loosen the grip of all that sealant too.

Thanks mate.
My screen is already broken, so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult.

The screen came out quite easily in the end.
Ran a plastic spatula round the edges to break the seal.
Me and my mate sat on the seats, feet against the screen and out it popped!
Fortunately I'd laid a duvet and old carpets on the bonnet.
Glad I got the screen out in advance. I found a wee bit of corrosion along the bottom, left hand corner, that I was able to treat and paint.

Laugh was the National Windscreens came the next day. Young lad who unfortunately had never fitted an old rubber seal screen. He gave it a go, but gave up.
An "older chap" is coming on Monday 4th November!
