Before taking out my petrol tank/ draining etc as it will still be off the road for another 6 months, no point in filling with new fuel (old stuff is 5 years old) at the moment and leaving it dry will make it rust, I want to look into it first by taking out the fuel sensor ( is it the bottom of the tank you see or a baffle hiding crud underneath. What do you use to reseal a fuel tank sensor When putting it back? Thank Chris

I took mine out last year to have a look inside the tank with a bore scope.
Inside appeared to be clean as a whistle.

I'm sure I got a new cork gasket from Malbrad.....

I need a new gasket too, cork sounds good (and easy enough to DIY). I replaced the 96's sender unit last year and all the gaskets I had were rubber and, admittedly, old and dried out. No matter how much liquid sealant I used, I couldn't get one to seal properly, so there's always a faint scent of fuel in the cab.

I've just used clear silicone (after fitting a new gasket) - worked well enough

Many sealants will disintegrate of course when dealing with petrol.

Steve with the 96 two stroke on hear put up a thread having chopped into a petrol tank, don,t know if a two stroke is the same as a 96 but there are all sorts of traps where rust etc can collect. You cannot see from his photobucket pics anymore and he seems to have left this forum, hope he is OK as he wasn't a well fella. He was describing having to pull back a small lid in one area that was housing a lot of crud. No amount of shaking around with bolts inside will clear that!

I am just going to leave mine, empty, flush and blow the pipes through when the time comes. Hopefully it will be free of rust as it has always had a decent amount of petrol inside and been kept in a dry warm garage the outside is mint, just praying the inside will be OK. No oxygen means no rust!

I used fuel and grease resistant Loctite blue RTV with the old rubber gasket.

Zagato, do you have any reason to assume there is a corrosion issue with your tank?

The only reason I wonder if mine has rust is from so many other people having rusty tanks. The tanks were sealed with anti corrosion paint from the factory but age must play a part at some time, especially with this modern fuel attracting moisture. . Hopefully mine will be OK, it will need the sludge clearing out as I did not put an additive in 5 years ago apart from Millers lead additive ( Hmmm I wonder if that also has an additive to stop the fuel gelling up also, will read up on it). Have seen quite a few old rusty motorbike tanks recently, the full ones have been ok but empty ones are rotten.

Excellent every little bit helps. The Millers VSP power plus fuel lead substitute I use "prevents fuel system corrosion and combats the adverse effects of ethanol in fuel". That will have helped.

I use an additive over winter for my motorbikes and mower BUT have actually used them too frequently for them to be needed. I ride through the winter. Cannot say the same for boat outboard petrol engines and Diesel engines. At the start of the season on our sailing rallies so many outboards don,t run as the idiots use old petrol from the previous year. Every year it happens, they never learn . A flush through and fresh petrol sorts it however at a nearby marine engine place.
