How does a Saab gearbox breathe? Or does it. If one fills up with between 1.7 and 2.00 litres of oil I don't get any leaks but like to overfill on the trials car for plenty of lubricating when going up very steep hills. Have been putting approx. 3 litres or more in but it throws it out somewhere? and settles down again at approx. 2.00 litres. So thinking of fitting a breather on top of box somewhere. Where do I fit one or maybe 2? Anyone any ideas or has anyone fitted one and why? The oil I use is Millers CRX nanodrive 75/90 which is expensive and I don't like losing it!
Ok so why by overfilling would the oil leak out? Surely 3 litres should stay in the box? All the seals are newish. Just had a look at box and is there meant to be a rubber type seal at both ends of selector shaft?
Have taken photos of gearboxes and will put on Facebook. Never had to replace the seal which would require driving a roll pin out of the shaft which retains the selector Driver.
Thanks Woody have checked box and it was missing the al. cup. Got knocked off somewhere. So presume most of the oil would have been escaping from the al.cup end. Normally put in 2.5 to 3 litres of oil.
2litre is normal but I understand you preferring a little more due your hill climb antics. However it is known that too much oil can destroy the speedo gear. This subject has been covered before and you have been involved. Going down the cooler and electric pump route with a spray bar internally has also been discussed.
Derek the problem is the planet gears overheat due to spinning very fast which they were not designed to do. Normal road use is fine. So try to get as much oil in the box for obvious reasons. Starting to use LSD's which lock out. Gripper diff. is good as they can set it up for what you want. So hopefully that problem over, time will tell. I don't know how much oil in box it would take to destroy speedo gr/ drive? Not had that problem. Also why would it destroy it?
