| Went to park last night and couldn't get reverse gear. The gearchange lever feels different. Normally in neutral you can move it forward or back easily to go from 1,2 to 3,4 but now I have to push it. Still engages 1,2,3,4 easily but can't get reverse. It 'feels' like it's something gone in the gearchange mechanism by the steering column rather than in the engine compartment but I can't be sure. I do know that the forked nut that attaches to the gear lever is broken; has been for years but didnt' seem to affect anything. Also noticed that the carrier sleeve wasn't bolted on but it's been like that for years. Looks very fiddly to disassemble. I see from haynes that there's a 'reverse catch assembly'; could something have worn on this? Any clues anyone? What wears or breaks to cause this? |

| Upon further inspection............. looks like the gearchange rod has had it; broken where it connects to the lever. Does anyone have a gearchange rod they can send me plus the forked nut plus felt ring (I guess)? | |

| There's a felt ring at the top of the gearchange rod. Its job is to hold grease. It tends to disintegrate after half a century. Any suggestions for a replacement?

| Owen, I am not familiar with the felt ring you mention, so I don't know its size. But would the felt rings you can get at the auto parts store to place around battery terminals that absorb grease to prevent corrosion work? You get 2 colors: red and green. Just a thought.
Good luck.

| er........... thanks Derek ;-) ; it needs to be a tube shape as a flat piece will just scrunge up. I think a sewn tube might do the same.

| I've no idea of the size/thickness/shape of the felt so difficult to make a suggestion. There is orthopaedic felt, felt heel pads, felt sliders for light furniture etc but not much around over about 1/4" thick. If John-Saab reads this (how are you John hope you are well, a stranger here lately) he maybe able to help although their business generally deals with thin felt. A combination of gluing and sewing might work as long as you use thick felt. | Edited by - Derek on 27 Jun 2020 11:28:57 | |

| Update; Managed to get it all apart but............ the reverse catch assembly also came apart! It's a spring in a pressed steel housing and it's 'sprung'. Anyone done this before? How do I compress it and get it back together? It doesn't look like too clever a design to me but what do I know? | |
