Melle,
If I had a toolbox with a vernier calipers in it, it'd probably also have a full set of large sockets so I wouldn't need to ask the question.

Will have a look for you tomorrow. I do have a spare nut and washer.

Found my spare nut. It is a close call between 5/8in UNC and 16mm x 1.5. The latter using a thread gauge.
The nut is 3/8in deep. I don't have a 16mm or 5/8in bolt to check for fit, but in line with past experience would err on it being 5/8 UNC.
The past experience from stripping previous cars is that the body fasteners have always been imperial, and the engine being from Ford Germany were metric.

Further to the above, it has been suggested you leave the nut on a few threads to stop the steering wheel hitting you in the face when you pull it off!!

Thanks Ian, I did a search and came up with that result too.
It seems to be answering the question 'What size is the nut' by giving the diameter and thread of the bolt.
Doesn't say what socket size I need though.

Good tip about leaving the nut on while I loosen the wheel :-)

Further to my suggestion to use vernier calipers, a ruler or tape measure should give a close enough measurement to ascertain a socket size from.

The standard socket size for 5/8 UNC nuts and bolts is 15/16" AF. In case it's metric, 24mm is the standard size for M16, which will be close enough to 15/16" not to damage anything on such a big nut even if it's imperial.

Have you checked if it's roughly 15/16" or 24mm? Would be a shame if Saab used a non-standard sized nut and you buy the wrong socket!
