Good morning All,

Can anyone please explain the the purpose of the very thin plastic washers / shims.

When I dropped the axle singlehandedly ( not a good idea), I left the fixing bracket in situ and removed the large bolt which goes through the bush. Unfortunately all of the washers fell out before I could see what was going on.
On reassembly ( assisted by The Troll ) we concluded that the shouldered washers bear against the bush with the shoulders facing outwards but it is not clear where the very thin plastic washers are situated.

Thank you
James

The metal washers are fitted with shoulder towards the axle bush. The nylon washers should locate on the shoulder of the washer next to the bush.
Their purpose is to limit the lateral movement of the axle and avoid metal to metal contact.

Thank you for your response velo200.

That all makes sense now.

I've just re-fitted my back axle after a refurb.
I could not get the nylon and steel washers in, both sides.
Too tight. I ended up getting the nylon and steel washer in one side, but only the steel washer in the other side.

It should be said that the old, centre bushing was exactly the width of the sleeve it sits in, the new one is protruding slightly, maybe half to one milli each side.

It was a barrel of fun getting the old centre bushing out.
Tried first to draw it out with appropriate sockets either side, with a bolt from my spring compressor right through the whole assembly. That didn't work, even with a little "gentle" heat.

Ended up drilling out the rubber, and then cutting the outer sleeve that was left.
Apart from this little issue, it all went very swimmingly.

I'll post some photos on a new thread, when I get a mo.
Away on holiday tomorrow.
Couple of days in Edinburgh!

When I get back on Wednesday, re-build everything bleed the brakes, and off we go, with nowhere to go, most car shows cancelled.....

I must have missed this. Just responded to a query off forum.
As such had to jack up the Troll to get a closer look at what I did when I put the rally axle in.
I had ordered a new set of washers from Beechdale back in 1989/90.
It was sometime in the 90’s when I removed the standard axle that had been on my second 96V4 - PUP 195K.
This axle was sold to David Clibbery who had snapped off the shock absorber pin on a rally.
I retained the body brackets which were removed for cleaning. It seems I have put the washers in with the nylon/Teflon against the axle bush with the stepped steel washer facing the axle bush each side. The original bolt, washer and nylock nut were in good order and reused.
I had previously ordered from Beechdale a new centre bush and bolt/ nut which are now in the parts stash.
I intended to make a copy of the installation/removal tool, and may still do.

Does the parts book show enough detail for you to see exactly how things go together?

These might help, I recall having the same trouble as Andy and could only get one nylon washer in, great fun when you have two people holding the entire axle in place whilst you're struggling!

Despite both being listed as just "washer" hopefully someone pulling theirs apart can identify the difference between 18 and 19 for the order they go back in (did mine so long ago, I can't remember which is which)

The centre hole on 18 appears larger than 19, which to me suggests 18 will be the nylon washer. The left hand 19 also has an extra circle to indicate the collar that the nylon sits over.

Thanks guys. Sorted now.
All four washers are in place and fitted. This was awkward but not impossibly so.
As said by previous contributors:
The nylon washer, part number 18 on the above diagram, fits over the shoulder of part number 19
(steel washer).
The nylon washers bear against the centre bush.

Anyone know where I can get new washers from?

If mine had all the washers then in my father's excitement at helping me with Dusty they have been thrown out.

Interesting that there are extra brackets between bush and body. I have so much underseal there I hadn't realised!

these are on Tradera currently, not sure if you meant the plastic of metal washer

I think I used nylon plumbing washers when I replaced mine
