Hi all our orange 95 likes to keep us interested. It now runs and is in use but the dipstick won’t remain seated and on the last run the oil cap blew off. Am I right to suspect head gasket issues? The oil cap may not be the correct one. The other odd thing is the temperature gauge is a bit erratic,it jumps up and down around the N but doesn’t overheat. As the car and engine have been put together from different sources there is a possibility there may be mismatches elsewhere.

Good to hear it runs Dave! Does the PCV valve work and are the hoses connected correctly? Post a pic of the filler cap and the rocker covers, and I can tell you if it's the correct one. Re the temperature gauge: is it like the thermostat is opening and closing all the time, or does the needle jump up and down really quickly?

Thanks for the reply Melle, due to my own technical inadequacies I can’t post photos on here. I can manage email or the dreaded Facebook with photos and video if that will work.

Dave, I've not received your email I'm afraid. Did you send it to saabv4[at]saabv4[dot]com? If the files are very large use wetransfer.com or similar.

Yes, that's the correct address, seems my hosting provider is currently experiencing issues and I'm not receiving any email on any of the domains I have with them... Can you please remove my email from your post above (click the "edit" button above the post), as publicly displayed email addresses have a tendency of attracting spammers, thanks!

Dave, I received below photos and a duplicate of one of them, but not a video. It looks like you have the correct oil filler cap. I see a potential issue with your PCV set-up though, namely that the off-side rocker cover has a small filter instead of it being connected to the air filter housing. This wouldn't explain the engine seemingly pressurising, and how much of an issue it is in practice I don't know. The PCV system as Ford designed it is probably better not to me messed with if you're not 100% sure how it works, most of the modifications I've seen were changes for the worse. Please make sure the valve works through visual inspection and by shaking it, you should hear the metal ball rattle inside the tube (a blocked valve may explain the issue).

EDIT: looking at your photos again, are you sure the hose from the n/s rocker cover is connected to the PVC valve? Looks like it's swapped positions with the brake booster hose...

Any backstory on the engine? Condition of the rings, valve stem seals? Compression? Does the dipstick still seat properly/ is the cap still firmly connected to the stick, and does it have the felt seal? Under what circumstances did the cap blow off? If at higher rpm I would suspect the rings or a blocked PCV valve.

Something else, which is completely unrelated, is that there's an expansion bottle cap on the rad. I can't see what's on the expansion bottle, but I know many fit them the wrong way around. This way the system won't pressurise properly, which can in turn lead to the engine running hot.

I'm not a fan of those air filters, or any small "sports" filter for that matter. They're horribly restrictive in my experience.

There is no check valve in the servo vacuum hose and I think servo hose and Pcv hose might be wrong way around? Can’t quite see properly.

Hi Melle and Iain G. Thanks for your comments I will investigate. The issue is partly not enough expertise so basic things could easily be wrong. The engine was one acquired as of unknown condition as we got the car as a shell without a drive train. The heads have been refurbished and it was reassembled by a guy with a lot of Saab experience but not on v 4s. The air filter is one that came with the engine. It solves the issue of clearance with a Weber carburettor but I know may not be ideal. I’ll try a photo with it removed so the pipes can be seen more clearly. Thanks again. Dave

Good call on the check valve in the servo hose Iain, missed that when I looked at the pics yesterday.

Those small air filters are convenient, hence very common on Weber conversions, but I think adapting a standard filter box and using a paper filter is a better idea.

Is there any particular type of check valve I need and which way should the airflow go?
