I'd like to put a new Weber carb on my 95 and I'm wondering what the most sensible way to achieve it is.

I've done the job to VWs in the past using an off the shelf conversion kit - this route is appealing if possible, and I've noticed Ashcraft do a kit, but no idea of cost or quality. Any other options to this approach?

If I were to go DIY how much fiddling is involved in terms of linkage and air filter mounting, and what do I need in terms of an adapter plate or manifold?

Check if your idle rpm is in the 800-900rpm range when the engine is at normal operating temperature. You'll need to warm up the engine until the thermostat opens before you can do any meaningful adjustments.

The mixture screw didn't make much /any difference.
I'm going to have another look next weekend.

Which one? A. mixture or B. throttle? Have you made sure that 1. the throttle butterfly fully closes (adjust throttle linkage or adjust B.) and 2. there are no air leaks (usually at the inlet manifold or the carb base)?

As I said at the top of this page (this post might roll it on to page 7) if the ICH came with the alloy ring the original filter will fit fine along with the rubber seal. Worthwhile for better filtering with minimal air flow instruction. Also gets rid of the annoying, to me, intake roar, that you get with these, to me again, silly little pancake filters.
You'll get answers about the hose. It has been mentioned before.

My son and I fitted the weber kit, turned the key, watched the fuel filter fill, then to our delight the engine fired straight up.

We then let it warm up, and started trying to fine tune it. My summary of this : it ran well as soon as it started, and the adjustment screw made almost no difference. I couldn't make it go 'out of tune', back it off, find a sweet spot, or any of that fettling. It just ran, drove fine, and that was it. It may be that it was running slightly better at 'half a turn out', but I might be imagining it. I was seeing vapour from the exhaust even when warmed up, but it was a couple of degrees above zero outside.
The choke/idle 'coathanger' connection fouls on the brake vacuum slightly, which stopped the choke opening fully on its own (i gave it a helping hand during tuning).
The kit comes with a small pancake filter. It seems okay. It's washable....not foam.
Any ideas of what to do with the right hand oil breather? I'm thinking of modifying the pancake to accept it (using a forstner bit drill and some metal tube glued in place).

Air filters can make a huge difference too. The cheap pancake or lunch box type "sports" or "performance" filters you often see on Webers may sound cool if that's what rocks your boat, they are usually particularly restrictive, which necessitates smaller jets. Not only are they restrictive, they're often also grossly under-dimensioned. Plain old paper filters in an adapted stock housing or a correctly sized and well-maintained K&N filter are a much better bet. John Passini's Weber books are very informative on carburation principles and carb tuning.

Jetting can be affected by what exhaust system you have fitted. Both the idle and main jets can often be beneficially changed if you have a Jetex/Simons system rather than a standard one. Go back to page 1 of this thread and have a good read. There are 6 pages for 34ICH issues and fitting tips.

Hello Mark,

I had a look at a few outlets selling the Weber 34 ICH for the V4. There seems to be a difference of opinion with some saying 50 idle and others either side of that.

I am too new to the V4 to assist greatly but from experience, I have used and consulted with Anthony at Fast Road Cars regarding Weber carbs on various classics.

Thankfully as you say, advice from here will be absolutely spot-on.

I'm currently running a 34 ICH, but that will be swapped when the engine is modified and a 32/36 DGV is fitted. I will be interested to find out what my idle jet is, now that you have mentioned this !!

I've received a new Weber 34ICH from Southern Carbs (in Crawley) which is a 'Nick Senecal' kit, which I plan to fit this weekend.

Apparently the idle jet in this is a "47", whereas the consensus on here seems to be to go for a "60". I know very little about carbs and jets, but the difference in those numbers sounds big to me.

I was thinking: Do you gents recommend buying a few different sizes and trying them out (they seem to be only a few quid), or just see how I get on with the 47?

Hi all, I disassembled my solex carb today and put all the bits in my newly purchased ultrasonic cleaner.

Came up a treat , and after a (very) frustrating afternoon putting it all back together and tweaking it, my 67 V4 now runs and idles properly for the first time in years.

If only I could drive somewhere other than Sainsburys in Bath to test it out,..

Hi Clive you should of asked Ive got a brand new 34inch Weber in the box with choke cable and all the bits I believe it can from Anthony at fast road never used it as Ive gone twin Weber...............paul

I've been following this thread for a while...
... and today Parcelforce dropped of a nice new shiny 34ICH from Fast Road Cars. This is destined to go on my 95.
I'll let you know how we get on... just don't hold your breath

Thanks the comment Melle here and in the other place. The engine now runs and we beginning to go through the things that will hopefully get it running smoothly. May take a while but as you say we are learning as we go.

I know nothing about ICHs, but please do not try to clean jets with a piece of wire or a needle or you'll ruin the bore; only use compressed air/ carb cleaner/ ultrasonic bath.
