Hi,
Has anyone bought any parts from mainland Europe since Brexit?
I am looking at buying some bits from saabklubben just wondered about difficulties with VAT shipping costs etc

One of the German Opel specialists I have bought from in the past has stopped mailing spares to the UK and doesn't respond to emails. Another one, found on eBay, doesn't seem to have any issues - I'm waiting for a new silencer (for the Opel GT) to arrive next week. The SSK "issue" seems strange, although I haven't bought anything from them this year; last purchase was a new heater valve for the 96 - expensive but very shiny!

Hmm, I think I may have been a bit premature in congratulating Skandix for having the post-Brexit VAT situation 'sussed' (though in reality I suspect the real fault may lie with UK Border Force)!
I've been tracking a parcel of C900 brake parts that I ordered from Skandix on 9th Apr; all going really well(it reached Parcelforce Inverness depot last night) but this morning it became clear that HMRC had levied charges for Import Duties and 'Handling' (unexpected, but fair enough), but also UK VAT - which I have already paid to Skandix !!
I'm told Parcelforce have written to me (how quaint) to let me know how much is due and will not release my parcel until these charges are paid (I've managed to short-circuit this a bit by phoning to get the details and make payment).
There is a process for reclaiming Import Duty/VAT incorrectly charged by Border Force, but you need documents and/or information from the package in order to do so (Catch 22 or what ?).
So ... will let you know how things go !

I too was in touch with the SSK yesterday (looks like they had quite a flurry of enquiries from UK in the last 24 hours) and was told they were having trouble "getting the VAT number" - which I took to mean that they were attempting to register for VAT in the UK, which would enable them to charge/account for the UK VAT on their orders (in the same way as Skandix, who seem to have got it sussed). They seemed genuinely disappointed at not being able to accept my order, no hint of a boycott !

I agree with you Andy, boycotting the UK (and it's strong following for SAAB) would be in no one's interest - Melle has probably hit the nail on the head that it coincides with other changes and they just haven't figured things out yet
It would be interesting to see if I did order parts for export to Canada what they'd say (unfortunately I don't need anything at the moment)

Yes, correct, but that in itself is nothing to do with brexit, it just coincides with it as new international (global) agreements on VAT collection and customs processing have come into force as of 1/1/2021 too. What it comes down to is that for sales of up to a certain amount, sellers now have to collect VAT for the country they are selling to, instead of national customs organisations doing it at the border as was the case until 1/1. Within the EU this is not an issue as there's a customs union and buyers pay the local VAT tariff of the country they purchase from, but Brexit isn't helping as we're now outside this union. Many courier firms have either suspended or completely stopped cross channel services because of the Boris & pals inflicted mess at the border. I hope he gets his act together quickly and negotiates a customs agreement with the EU as soon as possible...

I honestly do not believe it's any sort of boycott, that would be in no ones interest.
I believe, (and there is a lot of confusing information on the subject), that as Derek says, you have set up some sort of bureaucratic process in order to sell to the UK. Quite why, I have no idea.
The small amount of business that the SAAB Klubben does with the UK, probably doesn't justify it.
I have been in touch with them this morning, ( I want one of those rear pinion gearbox bearings), and they do say that they are trying to found a solution, but don't sound too hopeful.
Ah Brexit, it just continues to give!

SAAB Klubben in Sweden told me on the 27th of January, that they would still be selling to the UK, and in fact told me that they would be selling at export price, ie free of Swedish VAT, though VAT would of course have to be charged when the parts arrived here.

can I ask what the issue is with shipping from Europe? is it that they can't figure out VAT? (or just a "boycott" due to the UK leaving)
surely there's a reciprocal agreement on VAT (no VAT on exports and it's paid at the entering country's border) now no different to if I was ordering parts from Canada
