Has anyone managed to take off top gearbox case cover with the gear shifter mechanism and lift off the cover whilst the engine gr/box is still in the car? if so did you manage to put it back??
I can't select most gears except reverse, although I lost that once only.
The clutch is all brand new and working fine. Plenty of throw on the slave cylinder.
There is a lot of movement/play in the operating shaft when any forward gear is selected, probably an inch or more. I don't think there should be that much. Consequently, sometimes it lines up and you get a gear but more often than not it just baulks and won't go in.
My guess is that the shifter yoke which is held on by a tension pin(roll pin??) has snapped or partly come adrift from the shaft.
Might be the catch shaft or catches is the problem.
Has anyone had a problem with the gr/box cover shifter mechanism.
I am hoping I don't have to take the engine and gr/box out again. I have only recently just put it all back in!

Thank you Anttik, it is interesting and helpful what you say. I had in theory worked out it was possible to change the top cover but didn't fancy fitting it all back. At least now I know it can be done. I have to keep reminding myself most of these cars are 50+ years old so things do wear out!

I have changed the top gearbox case cover from another gearbox while the gearbox + engine were installed the car. But my car is left hand drive, so it is probably easier or harder to right hand drive to do that.

I changed it because gear jumped off sometimes. It did not correct the problem, but after changing the cover there was less play in the operating shaft. I also changed the gear selector shaft U-joints to less worn ones. The selector shaft U-joint worn fixing bolts might make some play as well. Actual problem for gear jumping off was in freewheel.

Yes have tried adjusting steering column in all positions makes no difference.
As to the selector shaft that seems ok. Checked the movement of selector shaft on box in car and 2 spare ones I have and there was 9 to 10mm on all of them. So presume that is normal.
So back to the drawing board. Will check again engine mounts to make sure one hasn't split, retaining nuts are tight, gearbox mount is secure and not split, bolt is tight.
Check clutch for correct amount of travel on slave.
Is there anything else I have overlooked?

have you tried adjusting the steering column and seeing if that changes anything? (sliding it backwards or forwards can resolve gear selection problems)

and the catches in the case cover are lined up? (I hate those things, getting them in the right place with a gearbox on the bench is a bit of a leap of faith, so full respect to you for doing it in the car!!)
