In order to keep this section alive and to give some enthusiasm to those Saab drivers competing on the Roger Albert Clark Rally in November, I have found these pics from the golden age of rallying - low entry fees no Health and Safety just fun!!!

I co-drove in this car whilst servicing for a friend in a 1300 Escort - the thing was truly terrifying and had a habit of shuffling the left hand half shaft out on tight right handers - shaving the tread off on the wheel arch. The owner was used to this and swerved violently to the left after the bend to relocate the shaft!!

This is one of me getting some route info off Phil Wilks in PUP96K before the start of the 1973 Border Rally. Didn't know at that time I would go on to own and rally the same car!!

I can't remember who is driving this 2 stroke seen here on the Northallerton Stages 1975. Woody any ideas?

Can't imagine this being allowed today but at least he's limping home - note the co-driver is also holding the spot lamp on - Cibes were always expensive!! Mintex Dales Rally 1973

Hi Geoff,
These are brilliant! I would love to see more and perhaps hear some stories from this era if you are able to post. I would love to get into historic rallying and hope to have a go one day. I was lucky enough for my birthday a couple of years ago to have a couple of laps of a forest stage in a Mark 2 Escort and loved it.
It is a few years off but how would you recommend getting started? I have looked at local clubs but it all seems to be tarmac sprints down here (Plymouth) which I enjoy going along and watching but don't really get the urge to compete in.
Cheers
Gareth

Glad you like the pics plenty more where they came from. Best way to start is 12 car road rallying and build up from there. There is an active motor club near you and I will try and get you details as a friend of my son regularly competes in them.

Found it South Hams Motor Club
http://www.shmc.co.uk

They do 8 to 10 road navigation events a year so a good club to start off with.

Car 71, the white V4 is GHO1?0K. Previously used by Joan Pink. At the time of the photo it may have been in the hands of Jayne Neate and Paul Wignall, as they used it on the Welsh Rally 1973 as it was seen two wheeling around Llandow race circuit. IIRC the car appeared later in 1974 at Derby Road Garage at Annesley, which gave me an opportunity to look around it. It was later acquired by Paul Mayer, as we met up on the Arkel Rally and the Dukeries Rally 1975.

Was that 95 a rally car or a service barge?

The Saab Competitions Dept had very well prepared 95s as service barges and as much care went into their preparation as went into the 96 rally cars. I was lucky enough to get a look around the competition dept in Trollhatten just a few weeks before an RAC rally ('73 or '74 I think) and you wouldn't believe how much stuff they could get in them - very impressive. I think 1974 was the first year they started using 99 combis as well as the 95s one of which you can see next to the 95. I will try and dig out some pics of them as well.

I remember hearing the service cars back in 1970. I was clearing the drive of leaves at my parental home when I heard a burble and humm of knobblies then the service cars went past the gate. Rushed as three went past fully kitted, one with a trailer at back, probably carrying a spare engine. This was at least a good 2 hours before they were due to go through Clipstone. Rang my friends and we went out to watch.
Saw them again as we walked to enter the Harewood House stage for 1972 RAC. Sadly didn't take photos.
