| Hello,
I have the slightly improved upon 96-V4 g/box fitted to my 1976 model; I believe that cars after 1975 had a slight strengthening mod to the crown wheel pinion / casing ??
Out of interest, what bhp can these boxes handle up to if the unit is in sound condition ?? The reason I ask, is that my engine will be subject to improvement and modification resulting in greater bhp.
Thank you.

| From Transmission No 315085 onwards approx Aug 1974, for model year 1975, the internals of the box were uprated. Primary shaft and countershafts were beefed up and for the countershaft a bushing, washer and front ball bearings were changed. I have two of the later transmissions, and recollect noticing the above items were different when I stripped one in 1979. The clutchshaft was beefed up earlier around 1972 I think. Below first pic showing shaped clutchshaft, 2nd pic the shaft is solid back to the seal behind the release bearing:-

Saab recommended the use of a cast iron housing p/n 10512 if close-ratio gearsets or alternative crown-wheel and pinions were installed and especially if engine power output exceeded 130bhp. The cost of the case was beyond my resources so I retained the standard casing when I had installed Spec 2 gearset and 6:35 CWP by my local dealer. It did eight rallies before being rebuilt with new bearings by JCT600 in August 1975. It was also of the earlier design. | Edited by - Woody on 25 Jul 2021 15:41:52 | |

| Thank you for the comprehensive reply, Woody, much appreciated.
My intention is to produce approx. 110 - 120bhp when the work is completed.
Under the circumstances, it looks as though my current g/box will cater for that. It's not going to be a hammered track vehicle but rather a very swift fast road car.
Regards.

| That's certainly the paper goal, Woody !! Even if I fall short, but still achieve 100+ I will be content.
Indeed, project photos will be posted.

| An issue can be the CWP nut coming loose due to a poor locking washer. There are better working washers available. Owners who have had this problem please pipe up. | |

| Thank you for mentioning that, Derek, it is certainly something I will be checking during the project.
