Hi All,
If the bores are slightly worn a set of Cord piston rings could be fitted as they are designed for worn bores.
Obviously this is a compromise but a possible alternative,

Cheers,

Barry

For 1500 cc engines you cannot use Pinto pistons.
I was hoping that Melle would come on, he's the guru on this sort of stuff!
Sorry to be late to the party, but you're right Andy, Pinto pistons don't work in a 1.5. In fact, 1.5 pistons are now incredibly hard to come by. I think JP are the only ones still doing them, but I'm not even sure of that.

I agree with the others about the condition of the bores, looks like corrosion damage from sitting, and they'll need a very good hone at least or more likely a rebore and oversize pistons. I would either find a better engine or do a full rebuild, anything in between is not really worth it in my opinion.

If a set of pistons plus the rebore is well over 500 Euros I'd think that a respectable used engine can be had for a lot less than that. Yes you do take a chance but some engines will have some history.
If there was a commonly available alternate piston for the 1.5 I'm sure we would all know about it by now. Note that this isn't a sibling of the Cologne engine.

The 1.5 V4 in Saabs is a Cologne engine (arguable the original Cologne engine as it preceded the Cologne V6).

Andy, the ones FW Thronton sell are JP pistons, I think they're the last manufacturer doing them.

Thornton's recently told me they only have standard pistons no oversize ones so no good either. Been looking for myself as well.

I vaguely recall something about using 92mm Volvo pistons with the standard 1500 crank but not sure if anyone can confirm that and which ones it would be?

In 2007 I paid €195 for a set of +0.5 1.5 HC JP pistons, and €135 for the rings. €330 in 2007 is about €425 today, which is about £350, so prices have definitely gone up quite a bit. Converting to 1.7 may work out cheaper, I have a few cranks in stock.

Aye Melle, and I'm still thinking about that conversion. Being able to use easily available Pinto pistons in the 1700 cc set up would certainly be better.
I've had confirmation back that they do +020", 030" and 040", and he said he has them in stock.

Andy might mean that they have Pinto pistons in those over sizes.
