Can anyone give some guidance on how to wire an electronic oil pressure gauge?
The gauge itself has +ve and -ve terminal on it, the sensor has one terminal.
I would guess 12 v supply to gauge, and the -ve side of the gauge goes to the sensor, which will have a variable connection to earth.
Is that right?

Hello Andy,

I have an electric oil pressure gauge on one of my other classics, the following may be of assistance:

Live wire goes from the instrument voltage stabiliser (IVS) to the (+) oil gauge terminal,

Wire from oil gauge (-) terminal to oil pressure sensor spade terminal,

Sensor earths via the engine block........... completing the electrical circuit.

The gauge must be fed from the IVS.

Hope that helps ??

Good luck.

Richard.

The sender and gauge must match electrically to give correct readings.

Thanks for your input guys.

SAAB 96L - As I suspected, but where is the instrument voltage stabiliser?

Derek:- The items came as set, so I "assume" that they are matched.

Hello Andy,

Looking at the Saab wiring diagram, there does not appear to be one - unless it is incorporated within the fuel / coolant pod; if so, then it is specific to that set-up.

I guess you have 2x options:

1- try the oil pressure gauge without incorporating an IVS............ its sole purpose is to stabilise the voltage at approx. 10v

2- Fit an IVS into the car's wiring:

a) Live feed from ignition side to the IVS

b) IVS needs to earthed either via the unit or a separate earth wire

c) live feed from the IVS to oil pressure gauge (+) terminal.

These days you can get the solid state IVS units that have a separate earth wire, rather than the bi-metallic type which earths via the metal body.

Personally, I would fit an IVS to ensure correct voltage and stabilisation of the oil pressure gauge.

Hope that assists ??

Regards.

Richard.

My oil pressure gauges always worked fine without an IVS (I wasn't even aware such a thing existed!). The ones I've used were VDO ones from Porsches and Audis.
